Would employers discriminate against an applicant who's just gone through bankruptcy?

A certain hypothetical person is considering regular personal bankruptcy due to being unemployed for an extended time, in a tough part of the country to get a job. Their wife wonders if that would cause trouble getting a job as a driver. Something about "bonding" or some such nonsense.

This would save over $600 per month in unsecured credit card debt and allow him to keep his house. They're unemployed and just about to get CDL. Any feedback from you folks?

    thanks

Hey-I don't know for sure.I wouldn't think so.Bad driving record and a criminal record would be a lot more of a problem i'd think. He could call whatever company he's thinking of and ask anonomously.Take care.Brian

Hmm... I don't recall going through any credit checks when applying with trucking companies, and I have technically been hired by 3 - FFE, USA Truck, and Maverick. I have horrible credit and no one said a word to me. You have to have a pretty much perfect criminal background anymore, but I don't think a bankruptcy would stop you from being a driver.

However, to be safe, I would pick a few companies you're interested in and call the, anonymously and ask about that. You don't have to give your real name, but I'm sure they'll tell you if you ask.

Not many run credit checks. Some companies that haul fuel will, probably some others that haul highly valuable and easily sold cargo. They probably figure someone with bad credit is more susceptible to steal due to their financial situation.

Agreed, not likely. Fuel and sensitive freight maybe but hungry mega carriers, naw.... BUT it does affect your auto and homeowners, life policies and will have a negative impact elsewhere even 10 years out. If they can see it they will try to hold it against you........I understand tho...been there.

Many grantors flock to your credit like it's a tell all about you....and it's not, not even close. Bad things, bad economy and bad kids happen.......so if the wife didn't have to go in with you, use hers.

    Good luck

The vast majority of companies wont care at all, if you need to be bonded that may be a different story but thats not common for almost all trucking jobs.

Why do people cry 'discrimination' when an employer passes them by because said employer can reasonably assume that their past poor life choices may continue after they're hired? When there are plenty of responsible folks out there looking for work and bearing clean driving records, good credit and a stable work history, why would an employer feel compelled to hire someone with less?

Its true that bad credit CAN be an indicator of poor decisions, however bad credit can also be the result of being laid off from a job you've been working at for the last 15 years and not being able to find another one due to the current market. My parents had excellent credit before my Dad was laid off from Lockheed and everything went downhill. They've recovered now and he got rehired, but not before being out of work for almost 6 months. Their credit rating is still low. That doesn't mean they make bad decisions, it means they were victims of bad circumstances.

Ideally there should be more information when it comes to a credit rating, like "this individual paid all his bills until this certain day, then it all stopped, so he lost his job" as opposed to "bad credit rating automatically equals an irresponsible person"

If I had perfect credit then got laid off, and then was refused a job because of it, I'd be pissed off too.

Do you really believe that those who end up with bad ratings through no fault of their own are just as irresponsible as those who just refuse to pay their bills??
