Depends on your definition of "friend", I suppose... but I don't think you have any worries unless this friend has no other friends and everyone in the middle of nowhere is too stupid or broke to let you saunter away with this rig for $5-8 or 20K.

Stranger things have happened, but if no one went to auctions there wouldn't be much sense in having auctions.

 

Make sure there are no applicable "arm's length transaction" rules.

I have a hard time believing a 14 KW is gonna sell for 8k. That truck could be in any small town in the US and it would sell for more than that. Unless the Gov't hired a mentally challenged auctioneer that doesn't advertise his auctions, which also doesn't make sense considering he relies on big dollar sales. How about you pay 8k, and I'll give you double. Hell, I'll give you triple.
