Be peaceful, not harmless. Ol Jeffrey preyed on the harmless.

Statistically its a vanishingly tiny chance of a big risk, but that risk is why insurance companies disallow it

Back when I was younger I helped a lot of people that needed a ride. There was a lady broke down on I 80 between Omaha and Lincoln, I picked her up and took her to the next truck stop, stopped in front of the doors where she could get to a phone and let her out there. The poor dear was scared to death of me but I did my best to keep her at ease for the half hour drive.
I picked up a family of four that was broke down in a snow storm and drove them to the next town where they could shelter and help. The wife was almost in tears when she thanked me for helping them.
I picked up a young guy that was trying to get to a job interview and dropped him at the nearest exit so he could get there on time.
I picked up a young woman who was trying to get to the prison to see her husband. There was a big lot across from the prison where I could turn around and let her out. She was nice and I enjoyed the hour we had to talk.
There were many others but these are the ones that come to mind. I'm not so young now and I'm pretty cautious about who I would pick up now. But to help someone in an emergency situation is always something that I will do.o

I have had really enjoyable conversations with the people whom I picked up. Will be picking up more in the future.

Nobody is calmer than a psychopath. All one of them needs is a shoelace and permission to get into the sleeper so they can be in your blind spot for a moment.

Why not learn from other's mistakes? Nobody lives long enough to make all the mistakes themself.

I used to pick up strangers all the time. Then I retired from the Highway Patrol.
