Would you rather drive a daily dedicated route that is 480 miles with 300 miles of two way state route driving or a 600 mile route with 500 miles of highway driving. Traffic is light to moderate. Pay is the same. Everything else is the same.
The reason i ask is because im on the dedicated 480 mile route. I'm not sure im a fan of driving 300 miles a day on a two way state route. Would you try to stick to mostly one-way highway driving if you had the choice?
Would you rather

the big road. less stress.
one little fender bender and a 2 lane is a disaster.
school bus in the AM. farmer Brown on a tractor. all kinds of things can cause big delays.bottomdumpin, Steel Dragon, Vic Firth and 3 others Thank this. -
I'd choose whatever is quicker, more truck stops and rest areas, less DOT scales. If I could try them both, I would tell you better.Steel Dragon Thanks this.

Let me put it this way:
My typical "long day", I have the option of jumping on the big road 15 miles from the house, running that for about 3 hours, and then jumping off about 5-10 miles from the receiver. Deliver, reload, and go back the way I came. Takes about 3-1/2 hours if run it that way, but pass 2 scale houses each way. OR, I can run the 2-lanes the whole way up there and back. No scales, same miles, but takes 4-1/4 hours each way.
In 3 years, I can count on one hand the number of times I've run the big road...with more fingers left over than used. The big road bores the hell out of me, and I've never understood why anyone would cross a scale unnecessarily. I've always preferred the narrow little hilly curvey fun roads. Besides, there are too many idiots out there on the big road anymore. I don't mind a traffic jam behind a combine or school bus, because they are just doing their job and eventually they turn off. What DOES bug me, though, is when I'm cruising down the interstate @ 72 mph and about to overtake a line of trucks when the 64-1/2 mph truck at the back decides they are going to step out and try to pass the 64-1/4 mph pack of trucks. That's just plain ignorant.OLDSKOOLERnWV, Steel Dragon, xsetra and 2 others Thank this. -
Agreed. I like big roads as well...
But I will say that driving 600 daily can wear on you pretty quick. Some people like the shorter routes, especially if pay is the same. Why drive 120 more miles if I'm not gonna get paid more for it. You also don't have a lot of wiggle room if something does go wrong and you have a delay or want to stop and eat, etc...
If I'm gonna run 600 a day I'd also be asking asking some questions about my work week, what the company expects, higher compensation, etc... I would not jump into it blind.Steel Dragon Thanks this. -

I thrive on adventure. I've done the city/regional thing, same thing, day-in, day-out gets really boring. But it all depends on the driver. Some thrive on line-hauls on the same routes going to the same places.
Steel Dragon Thanks this.
