Yeah you guys paying for the fuel would be better off running everything through a rewards credit card and paying it off every month.

For us company guys any rewards card like Loves is free money since we don't pay for the fuel. The more ways I can use points the better. I would get more bang for my points with hotel rooms over high priced truck stop items. I wouldn't use them on the road so it would need to be associated with a chain.

OP does Loves own or have relationships with any Hotel chains?

I would spend points if it meant the hotel had only pull thru parking to minimize 2 am impacts AND had control over the lot to prevent I35 Texas rest stop style parking.

My question is in reference to truck stop rewards based on purchasing fuel. If a stuck stop had affiliations with hotels and you could eventually use those rewards for a hotel stay, would you?

Can you explain more about how the Flying J Point program worked and how you obtained the hotel stay with those?

Not sure how that would work ... most drivers who exclusively fuel at flying j or petro or any major chain do so because their company gets the fuel at a very good price, so much so the truck stop isn't making hardly anything on the fuel. I'm not sure any more incentives are needed to draw the drivers in ...

Besides that those major chains have too many customers. I can never get through one quickly if I just want to stop for a quick break. So I don't go there much anymore

So, you would rather shell out $100 cash to save X% of $100 on your taxes? Rather than get a larger savings for a free night? Or 50% off a room? Seems to me the bigger savings is not having the cash outlay to begin with.

But I am new here... lol :)

Now I do agree that using points for food is a bit better use as you are getting the benefit of double dipping... No cash outlay and still using the standard daily deduction.

Well you bash my thinking then endorse my thinking. Which is it? I'm a driver with no family and no need to "vacation", so any motel acquisition I do decide to use is going to be job-related and tax deductible. But furthermore, I use hotel rewards cards for these, and these have their own discounts and free rooms offerings, not to mention "CDL discounts" we receive. And I don't think they will allow BOTH rewards systems to be used to time of sale. It's one or the other. So why lose any tax benefits, when there are plenty of other ways to redeem truck stop rewards points that won't penalize your tax deduction capability assuming you're going to capitalize on hotels, anyway?

I understand those who might vacation and use points for hotels there, and that's fine. But I suspect you may have to save and scrimp points for 9 months or more to earn one $100 night value stay. I'll stay in hotels 3-4 nights a month and utilize hotel rewards cards for these.

I use my Pilot points for the big stuff, like a GPS or something, and I deduct it off my taxes too.

I know it works out the same whether I spend points or my cash on food or the big items or hotel rooms.

    And points add up quick
