I was hoping to message with someone about the following particular situation in my story because it's a little complicated to unspool out on a message board, but just in case this catches anyone's eye and starts a conversation, here goes.
(And if you think to yourself, wow, this person does not know anything about trucking, you would be correct. I need your help.)
My character Ross is a company driver. I'm trying to get him back and forth across the States. I don't know what kind of company and what kind of loads that would be. I don't know if he gets a whole different kind of truck once he drops off a load.
I looked up exports of different states in the 70s to try to hypothesize what someone could carry from a point A to a point B. North Carolina exported blue jeans. Las Vegas had some blue jean distribution centers. So I sent my guy from NC to LV. Then I was trying to figure out what he could take out of Nevada. Nevada exports open mine mineral concentrates..... but... that's a different kind of truck, I think. And most mineral concentrates go in shipping containers onto private trains. Though did find some refineries in Texas that would have needed minerals shipped in.
So that is my big stumbling block right now... I need to get my character around the country in the right vehicle carrying the right load.
I have a hundred other questions as well. The next one would be, how does dispatch work. And then some more after that.
Thank you for any time reading this.

@x1Heavy is your man, click on his avatar and start a conversation with him. Do us a favor and keep him busy. He has a lot of 411 and has a way of explaining things. Story telling is a way I can described it. Fiction telling but i think you would be smart enough to figure fiction from non-fiction. Others will chime in within time on here if you need anymore 411.homeskillet, thelushlarry and cathyNYC Thank this.

do you have 10 pounders?

Be careful who you listen to if you want your story you are writing to have any semblance of reality. I get the concept of suspension of disbelief, but wouldn't write about a baseball player that hit a home run every time he stepped to the plate.
Just saying before you use ideas from certain posters here you you might want to take a few minutes and check their posting history and how others respond to them.Last edited: Aug 23, 2019

Id buy someone a steak dinner if they could price the existence of a double under. Ive never even heard of one and been around trucks my entire life. Double overs were very common when engines only put out 750 ft lbs of torque on the high end and had low ratio rear ends. 4.11 was an extremely common gear ratio back then. But double unders? Never even heard of it. Deep reduction is the term for extreme low gears in a transmission. That's what my 77 k100 had. 15 speed double over drive with deep reduction.homeskillet, Art Vandelay and cathyNYC Thank this.

Who is this excellent beast?

Ah just write the story how you want. Most of the time the "real" truckers on here can't even agree how things currently are and for sure not how they used to be lol.
cathyNYC Thanks this.
