Story telling is a form of what they call "Yarning" to spin a yarn with words on the sea. Sometimes a song. It's 8 months with a load of china tea to and from by clipper or longer than that on coal or ore from Australia by windjammer. A form of trucking sail ship that was really useful in her day.
There is a little truth, take the Irish tune, what shall we do with the drunken sailor? Well, you drop a boat and tied it to the ship and tossed him in there until enough hours pass to eliminate the alcohol and the difficulty that goes with it to be sober again.
What shall we do with the drunken captain? Well thats quite another problem entirely.cathyNYC Thanks this. -

My 2 bits. Make year 1979 that seems to be the quintessential year for some reason to me. I was born in that year so bias some. But really that was the one of the most trouble years I think for truckers, and the height of truck manufacturing.
Also to note there were not many trucks with air ride then. Nobody had Air conditioning, front brakes were not needed yet so most drivers used the Johnny bar"trailer brake". No seatbelts was just fine. Trucks belched black smoke often, and we're louder than now days. Showers were a seldom thing then so people smelled different than today. And fast food was not popular then. Also I just realized the Flying J in North Salt lake City still has payphone, I have not seen any of those in years. Blast from the past.cathyNYC Thanks this. -
