We have an account with a very regular shipper, and lately (last 3 runs from central CA to PA) their BOL's have showed 37xxx lbs give or take a few hundred, yet I scale out at 77/78K lbs. This tells me straight up that I'm loaded to at least 41/42K. Should I "rat" on them to dispatch or management?

This happens a lot. Most of the time it's a places that might load 40+ pallets but the bills do not include or account for pallet weight. Otherwise I would not worry about it as long as they're not over loading beyond gross limits

Unless the discrepancy causes an issue, like running overweight on an axle in CA with the tandems at the 40’ mark, just roll with it....

You don't rat on them when you call and tell your company what's going on.

The shipper has an obligation to tell you what the weight is, if you scale the load and it is different from the BOL, make a note of it on the paper work, tell your company and let them deal with it if it is illegal.

Otherwise if it is legal, just run it.

This is my only concern, really, as I am never over gross, nor unbalanced on the CA 40' rule. For the record these listed weights are supposedly including the pallet weights, as both totals are on the BOL's.

It depends on what you're hauling, if you're hauling a product that you get paid by the pound then you need to let your dispatch know. If it's not by the pound that you're getting paid for then I don't really think it matters.

There is going to be a total weight on that CAT scale when I get to it.

It might differ from BOL by a little bit. Im not worried about that.

It's when I did container work loading ball bearings in Richmond until they fill that box I get worried. I usually had a standing permit for 100K in two states provided it's going to ships. Sometimes the weights were beyond that and it is a problem but since I don't haul seacans anymore I don't stress about it. The customer shipping the bearings paid for the box and it's going to Europe usually Bremen etc and the buyer is paying for as many bearings that will fit into that thing. Hopefully there is enough profits all around.

If it's legal run it. Make a note on BOL and attach CAT ticket if it's really bothering you, let the office time fight that one out.

It's not uncommon for the bills to be off.
Just an example I have a home depot load that I haul and in the remarks it says 'bills are usually wrong , scale load'
But I would mention it to your company in case they're getting a weight rate on the load.

Sounds like the shipper is sending more than what they are contracted for. When i hauled refractory sand for vesuvius usa, they used to attempt to send an extra bag every once and a while, us drivers would tell dispatch, and they would be billed for the extra, then several weeks would go by and they would try again
