WTF tire? Anyone ever seen something like this?

That's not going to hurt anything. It's not down into the structural part of the tire, and if you have some sort of active balancing, it'll run a long time like that.

My boss wasnt too worried about it either. You are correct in that it doesn't go all the way to thebottom of the tread. You dont think a DOT officer would flag it?

393.75: Tires.

(a) No motor vehicle shall be operated on any tire that—

(1) Has body ply or belt material exposed through the tread or sidewall,

(2) Has any tread or sidewall separation,

(3) Is flat or has an audible leak, or

(4) Has a cut to the extent that the ply or belt material is exposed.
