Just thought of this. Make sure the 12 v constant wire has power at the tuner. That could make it lose it's programming if it has one. I can't remember if it's solely powered by the radio or not. Make sure you check the radio's constant as well.

You said this was an Alpine unit? Is it an older unit by chance. On my old alpine unit every time i would switch between cd, mp3, am/fm and back to Sirius. It would totally lock up the radio, and nothing but shutting the ignition off would reset the dang thing.

On my newer Alpine unit every time Sirius would update it would screw it all up and as "updating" every time I changed the channel. But, that was on my personnel vehicle that I only drove when I was home every couple of weeks. I'm not real sure who to blame on that deal?

On my old dock And play I would have issues with the antenna coming unplugged, but it would actually say "antenna unplugged". Not sure if your Alpine unit will tell you if something can unplugged so I would physically check all connections. Also, the antenna wires are really thin and notorious for rubbing through where we feed them through the doors or windows. That's the first place I would actually check...

As its updating try wiggling the wires, if a wire is broken hopefully it will reveal itself then.

I actually worked yesterday and my Alpine XM was working just fine, so it's definitely your unit.

Yes It is. For now I have resolved to just waking up every morning and doing an update and It works fine or just leaving it on all night and the volume all the way down. At least it works when I do that. Got have my XM working all day! :)

That would save me time and money but i don't know how. I don't want it to give me problems down the road, that's why am looking for somewhere to get it down right.

Never tried it, but just call around the regular Car stereo shops I don't see why they couldn't do it.
