How many hours can a truck driver drive in a day?
Best Answer - Chosen by Voters
In the USA, a truck driver can drive for a maximum of 11 hours, and work for a maximum of 14 hours in a day, before having to take 10 hours off duty or in the sleeper. He is also limited to working no more than 70 hours in an 8 day period, before he has to take a 34-hour reset. There are slightly different rules for bus drivers.
This is not correct. The correct answer is that a driver cannot DRIVE after having been on duty for more than 14 hours. They can be on duty for 900 hours straight if they can stay awake that long.
Also, a driver can work 168 hours in a week if they feel like it. They just cannot DRIVE after being on duty for 70 hours in an 8 day period, until they have been off duty or in the sleeper for 10 consecutive hours (or 8 consecutive hours in the sleeper combined with either 2 hours off duty or in the sleeper), or unless they complete a 34 hour reset. A 34 hour reset is not mandatory either, it is just an option.
The scary part is that this was probably written by a driver. While following this advice would not get anyone in any trouble legally, it might be someone's attempt at laziness. I cannot believe that this was chosen as the best answer. There are other replies which are not quite right from other posters as well.

All I can say is do not let the DOT know your user name on this form during an inspection check.

You might want to peruse your own answer...yours isn't that accurate either!

Can anyone please tell me what is wrong with my answer? The entire point of my post was not to break everything down into a million peices. It was to point out that you can work after 24 hours, and that you can work more than 70 hours in a week. There is no limit on how many hours you can work.
There you go. That is the answer.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 7, 2011

The unlimited non driving hours still count towards your 70. You can't work over 70 total without a reset or gaining some back the next day. You can drive 11, and work 59 hours more on the dock and then it's nappy time. That's the max scenario.

Uh no. It states may not drive after 60/70 in 7/8 days.
otherhalftw Thanks this. -
Morphines still wrong. I could drive up to 14 hours in a 24 hour period. I don't work that hard but I could.

There's a button on the YahooAnswers home page for suggestions:

Or you can add your own answer. But you want people to read your reply. If you throw in all those links no one's going to bother.
