Early 70's and switcher tucks were usually former road tractors.

Just about every tanker outfit had a few dusty old B Modles [I remember one FM600, think refuse cab] running around various tank washes and pre-loading cement tankers.

I remember seeing a smaller competitor with a 'Bartlett' hydraulic 5th wheel keeping up with two of ours who were having to crank legs.

Each was old, tired, dirty and smelly so were all called yard goats.

Some places had a couple more against the fence for parts to keep the goats running.

I never liked the term yard dog, but at first that was the only term I knew. I found out the 'proper' title is Yard Hostler, or simply Hostler.
I don't remember having one slid my tandems on me. But, I've run into alot of really nice and helpful hostlers in my travels... And a few, well, not quite so nice and helpful. But, the nice, helpful ones have significantly out numbered the others.
