I was driving through the CA to AZ border on I-10 once and got the green light to bypass the scale. There was a truck behind me who got the bypass for the scale too. As I approached the on ramp for the scale, I noticed a truck, leaving the scales and merging right into me, so I got over into the hammer lane to allow him unhindered merging. So did the guy behind me. What does the merging truck do? Nails it and blows around me on the right. That wasn't so bad, his truck was fast as hell, but the worst part was the guy behind me, who pulled one of those "ride your butt till it's clear then floor it and pass you so fast that you have no time to so much as put your blinker on to signal you're changing back to the slow lane." Then all the cars proceeded to do the same thing, along with a few other trucks. I was hung out to dry in the hammer lane for a moment or two.

Stop thinking of it as "hung out to dry". Who cares what lane you're in when you're in a truck.
I don't care if fourwheelers or anybody else has to wait while I pass or get "stuck" in the hammer lane.
Not being a dik, but we're out here earning a living, not recreational driving. That big truck knows if he lets you over then he'll be stuck behind you. I always try to make room for a merging big truck. 4wheelers not so much. They have choices we don't. Hammer down or fall in behind, I let them decide.
I'm keeping it on the floor. Anything less is a paycut.

I don't want to be stuck in the hammer lane in CA. They ticket trucks for that, unless you're passing and not speeding, correct?

One thing that pisses me off in relation to this... I haul heavy (100,000-130,000lbs) same deal I am courteous to let people over but then they don't want to let me back over.. Then of course the worst is now I am at a hill and well with all the weight it drags me down pretty quick (we also have under powered trucks which don't help) and now I look like the DI@K holding up traffic in the middle lane.. With trucks riding my ### like I am not able to move over buddy cause now all the cars are getting into the right lane so quick I don't have time to get over... Now I most of the time I will just keep on trucking and if they want to merge they can speed up or slow down, unless it's a big truck then I will get over...

As stated before.. It's a courteously not a right.. Those cars and trucks are obligated to get into traffic safely.. In fact if they hit you while trying to merge they will automatically be charged.. It happened to me a few months ago and the car got charged for "improper lane change" and "fail to merge safely".. Funny thing is the guy in the car says to me "didn't you see me"... I said "nope you were in my blind spot... Didn't you see my big yellow and silver truck that is like 75 feet long" ..... Moron...

Somedays I am pulling my hair out, but more days I am just relaxed and take it easy... I have learnt to be more patient now that I am a City driver (in a very busy city).... But I still mutter under my breath on all idiotic moves I see done... It keeps me sane !!!

I'd be irate if a guy said something like that to me after he ran into the side of me... I am on a sports car forum and every so often someone will post about how rude the drivers are for not moving over for him to merge onto an interstate. That is one of the things I remember most from learning to drive a car... when you're merging, it's your job to merge safely, not the people on the interstate. There are yield signs at the end of many onramps, I wonder if people even see those when they're driving.

That too drives me crazy, but if I notice they are starting to do it, I just speed up to get in front of them a good distance and come back over and slow back down to my normal speed. Sometimes i get the bord or the driver will start yelling crap on the CB and i just say "No Habla English" and if they ride my butt they get the jakes.

As for the truck riding your butt while your trying to pass someone, I think that is just stupid. But also, if your truck does 63 and the guy your passing goes 62, stay in the right hand lane and just slow down 1 mph. We don't want to spend 10 miles while you two place race cars

Most states have laws about being in the hammer lane and not passing. If you are hung out to dry a mile down the road that bear sitting in the middle has no idea you were just a courteous driver..he just sees a bunch of 4 wheelers passing you on the right and you are impeding traffic

My truck goes 61. The way I usually play the passing game if I come upon a 60 or 59 mph truck is, I will slow down to his speed and forego passing him at first. I wait for a hill (plenty of them out west) and guage how much he slows down... if I am significantly lighter, then I'll take that opportunity to pass him quickly. If not I'll just slow down and pace him.
