Had taken my dad along with me on a haul from Wichita to Portland Or. We were staying in hotels every night along the way. One cold snowy/rainy dark night I found a Super 8 with truck parking. Backing into a muddy parking spot with water filled pot holes and no outdoor lighting, I had a little boo boo. I found the one concrete barrier that was spun the wrong way, probably from a previous truck hit. I ended up bending the trailer bumper. The bumper was already rusted and rotted mostly through, so it only took a minor hit to fold it way back. I simply should have gotten out to look.
I did manage to learn something from this, or at least reinforce previously learned lessons out of this deal.
Number 1: I was out of my element. I was some where trucks do not belong. Trucks belong in truck stops and rest areas. Every where else in between belongs to the four wheelers.
Number 2: I was being lazy, and didnt want to get my boots or the inside of my truck muddy.
Since I had already violated rule number 1, I should have doubled my efforts with rule number 2. GOAL would have prevented this entirely. I have nobody to blame but myself on this deal.
Yet another trucking lesson learned the hard way

At least you're able to admit it and come to grips with it. And at least it was relatively minor. To all new drivers out there...and experienced drivers as well.... if you're not sure.. just get out and look. Could mean the difference between next week's paycheck or no paycheck at all.

from my day cab days running from Mass to Richmond, Va or Louisville, KY, finding truck stops with motels was a chore at times. if a truck stop did not have a motel on the premises, but nearby, then I HAD TO park there instead. and yes, muddy rutted parking.......
well crap happens. next time you know better. there are cheap boot covers you can buy, they wash off easy enough as well. -
What are you doing? Taking responsibility for your own actions? You know that is not what you are supposed to do. You need to blame somebody else. Here is a list of some of the usual suspects. Liberals, conservatives, republicans, democrats, tea partiers, illegals, Mexicans, gays, Muslims, rookies, super truckers, police, dot, 4 wheelers, big evil trucking companies, office people etc etc etc. Remember nothing is your fault.
Jarhed1964, Bobcat Tail and Joe_Bags Thank this. -
Even the most veteran drivers have those days. I did the same exact thing one time. Hotel + post in snowbank+ backing without checking= boo boo!
papa1953 Thanks this. -

You learned from your mistake and that's key.
You shared it with the forum and that's admirable.
Sorry it happened, but maybe you posting this may keep another driver that reads this from having the same "oops" in a similar situation. -
