Well she must be warm enough for the night... After I turned her down she hit up a Werner driver, and they were "busy" for an hour... Then she got in her little car and left, quickly.

I think they do. My son looked at schools and they mentioned this.

I heard for a while that being a pilot wasn't even that great a pay and it was hard to get hired. I was curious about it myself, but didn't pursue it.

I think those that did get hired eventually may decent pay, but I also heard a lot of people struggled at the entry level financially or have issues getting their required flight hours. I get the idea that this could be seen as a low pay apprenticeship situation and if people just pay their dues they can make it, but I think this is getting to be financially brutal to beginners in either aviation or even trucking.

Again to be fair, those that are able to keep advancing might make it to Captain and earn very good money, but I wonder if that comparable to finding good niche jobs in trucking with high pay. You have to be able to stick it out and not be so discouraged or disgusted you abandon the career or the Entry Level becomes a revolving door with few staying to move up.

Today airline pilots are very underpaid.

I have my private pilots license, nothing fancy just single engine land, visual flight rules, not instrument rated, but I know quite a few comercial pilots and airline transport pilots.

They have to pay to build thousands of hours to to be considered to fly for a small regional carrier, and that costs big money.

A regional carrier will start a second seat (co-pilot) at 18,000.00 to 22,000.00 a year. Put them on crap runs away from home.

Many of them have to get food stamps or other assistance.

After they build enough hours and they can play the politics game well enough they can move up to a captains spot.

Put in 3 to 5 years and a couple thousand hours as captain then they can try for spot with a major airline at a livable wage, but have start at the bottom again with second seat crap runs and no seniority.

ATP's have a mandatory retirement age of 60.

A female regional pilot used to post on here. She was attending cdl school for trucking because she was making only $17K per year as a regional pilot.

Not an attack but this is inaccurate on so many levels, especially in today’s market for pilots. I did it for 15 years. There are NO politics to becoming captain, it’s all by seniority. I’m not going to argue the point but if you can afford the initial training (which is very expensive) and get appropriate experience to be hired by an airline, in time you will be making money hand over fist with 15 days off a month, great benefits and unlimited free travel. It’s just a fact. It can be a great job albeit very stressful at times.

Did you leave aviation recently or several years ago? Maybe the industry is going through changes?

I can imagine this issue has added a lot more to the expense of training or hassle to getting the extra seat time in a plane.

Fight erupts over training hours for pilots

Fight erupts over training hours for pilots

At the center of the fight is a rule regarding the minimum training requirements for commercial pilots.

Following a deadly 2009 Colgan Air crash in New York, in which pilot error and a lack of experience was to blame, victims’ family members lobbied Congress for stricter regulations for regional air carriers.

Lawmakers ended up adding language to an aviation bill that increased the minimum number of flight training hours from 250 to 1,500 for first officers who want to obtain a license to fly commercial passenger airliners.
