Your right, the " Captain of your Ship " outlook is fading big time.

If anything Mr Rocknroll81, that was by far our biggest and most cherished freedom on the big road all these years. To be told to be somewhere with a valuable load by telephone in 10 days back in the day... somewhere far, far away with lots of payroll filling our pockets too tired to spend it on a friday night after we got unloaded there on the other side of far and far away.

I wonder sometimes as a old man some nights what will be required for the collective Industry to take back the true Captain of the Ship as enjoyed today by our esteemed Airline, Air transport ATP licensed Pilots in their heavies and embraers zipping people hither thither and yon all over the USA in what seems to be a rocket ship straight up and back down again in 15 minutes.

People on the old Eastern Airlines at Friendship Airport always had time for us kids up on the observation deck back in the mid 70's before it was rebuilt into Baltimore Washington International. In them days you had a open deck 20 feet from the airplane loading below you on the first floor via skyway. And had a fine view of the poor Lead Sled L-1011 whisperjets using every inch of runway 090 to claw their overweighted fully fueled airframes with hundreds of impatient souls into the sky bound for lands across the ocean far away. The People always had time in between flights for us kids to visit and ask questions about everything. They never got tired of us.

9-11 made sure those days are a memory. But I refuse to sit quietly and keep them just a memory. I like to share them because at one time we were a people working for our daily bread each day and had a economic power that had to be seen to be believed along with like a 80% max tax rate and 20% interest for those who bought houses during that time.

I'm afraid that as the government gets more involved the " Captain of your Ship " will never return. I know of one company that still has that philosophy. Interesting that you brought up the past with the airlines, made me think about the film footage my dad took back in the 50's-60's at Gen.Mitchell field in Milwaukee all the planes were all props. Know of a guy who flew a B 17 in WW2 made it home and flew for Eastern and retired there, Eastern did a story about him and his B17 days, guys in his 90's and still going strong.

Yeah, you've made that clear yet you fail to explain why. I see them doing more than anyone else for us. They've had many successful court rulings but I guess you'd rather ignore those pesky little facts.

It took a couple of pages for someone to hit the nail on the head. ELDs having nothing to do with safety.

It's to make owning a small business more expensive. Which will create less competition.

How much is a Qualcomm or People Net? $2000

Take a small company with 50 trucks.

    50x$2000 is $100,000

How many companies truck companies with 60 employees have $100k sitting around?

Then the monthly service fee. $30 $35

    50 trucks times $30 is $1500 or $18,000 a year.

Where is the $18k a year coming from? Oh the drivers wages.

It's the Walmart model. Cheap labor and high health insurance puts everyone out of business except for Walmart.

    .

Well said !!! The ELD mandate has nothing to do with safety. It's all about money and control.

Wait! What? You believe an app on your smart phone is less obtrusive than an ELD.
