You guys that run reefers,

The quietest place I ever parked was that last rest area on I-40 EB in Kalifornia before Needles. Being that it was Kalifornia, everyone had their engines off and it was super quiet, you could hear the coyotes howling in the distance. It was very tranquil and since it was fall, very cool. I opened my vents, windows and slept like a log.

Reefers don't really bug me, I guess two years at Stevens saw to that, lol.

 

I remember trying to keep my idle down, before APU. It could be a cool 40 degrees out, which would be perfect for me, but sometimes the smell of piss is so bad it is downright dehumanizing to sleep with the windows open.

But I understand the point of the OP. I drive reefer and try not to park next to those with their windows down. And I try to park next to other reefers.

 

Cut me some slack, bro, my truck lacks the manual fan switch.

 

I was talking to a reefer driver the other day, he mentioned that he's so used to the reefer that he wakes up if he doesn't hear it running.

Last night I parked in Faribault Mn. away from everybody. About 2:00 am a reefer pulled next to me. Loud reefer, loud super chicken hauler truck.

 

I know what he means. One time with Stevens, I woke up about 1AM when I noticed my reefer kept cycling into defrost. I was hauling ice cream. I got up and checked the temp. It was 31F when it should be -20! I was at the Tallulah, LA T/A. I immediately called night dispatch who told me to head for the nearest Thermoking dealer on my route, which was in Jackson, MS. I got there and the on-call tech was already at the shop. Turns out that a chunk of ice had clogged the drain tube for the coil and it had backed up and made a mess. He cleaned it all out and got my unit running. Just then 2 more trucks pulled up and he remarked how it was going to be a long day, lol.

Parked at the nearest truckstop to finish out my break (since this was the old 10/8 days when you could actually do that and not be in trouble).

 

just anthor thought on this, we truck driver's are um, i'm thinking nice way too put this, , well i wont say it, he allready said it in anthor post what we are , bout get 7 post back, but also i never had a apu, i just got down unloading the us mail, catalogs, at a warehouse, then the mail truck's come too this warehouse and get the there catalog's, anyway i pull out out, it's a old manufacturing plant so there a super big parking lot, i asked if i could take my 10 there, it was all fenced in , nice , i didnt have a reefer, just a box trl, doing the boss a favor as this was a relay load , that got dropped in the yard and since i was there getting my tractor pm, and got done with that, sure i'll take it in, so i was sitting there waiting for my next load on my 10, it was late and the place were i worked at , everybody went home at 5pm, so i knew ,no load till morning, i was in a nice place, nice cool out roll down the windows a bit , when the same company truck pull up beside me and i just about fell alseep when roarrrrrrrrrrrrr , he had a dang apu on his truck dang that was loud, got up move my truck clear across the lot and i still could hear that dang apu way over there, if there that loud , that's worst then my reefer i had, then i dont want one, i never get any sleep

 

You get use to anything if you are tired enough. Many new drivers complain about sleeping in a moving truck. Eventually they get use to it.

I always slept with the TV on. It drowns out a lot of the background noises. But I will wake up if my reefer quits running. Even on cycle if it fails to restart.

 

my second boat was built in stonington conn pre WW11 had an old grey marine (671 Detriot) only 2 bunks both in the engine room either side of the motor. Now that was loud slept fine but i might be a lil hard of hearing now. Was nice and warm in feb too

 

Here's a thought for all you people complaining about reefer noise. Quit parking out away from everyone. That's where the reefers should park.
