I want to add! Trucking is like construction!
If construction is slow then your check is little
If trucking is slow then your check is little
If construction is going good you work.
If you are a driver and trucking is good you must run your butt off legally.
You can't make up for lost time by running illegal (well you can, however the outcome may not be so worth it). But if you can take the freight legally, get on the ball and use them hours of service the best you can legally!
You can actually drive probably 13 hours in one day so whats the problem. Yeah next day may not be "as" many but the following day might be 13 again.
Everyone averages everything to 11 hours in a 24 hour period, that's the biggest problem there!
The biggest problem right now is the ECONOMY is fried and we are all suffering in our paychecks one way or another!I know I am and I am not a truck driver!
Sometimes I would love to have a big lump sum pay check than a little pay check that only pays the bills. So steady income sometimes might not be the answer either. Just depends on each persons life style I guess
You MUST read this! It helps me prove what I am trying to get you to understand!

Kind of like saying when profits are down at a fortune 500 company, the CEO lays off 10,000 workers, and the stock goes up, and he gets a huge bonus.
Based upon that logic, I have no qualms whatsoever in doing some slightly ceative fudging, to make a buck. Safely, of course.
Not arguing with ya, just posting my common sense opinions on the world wide web. Besides, where else can ya post a pic of a baby smoking a Marlboro?.....(grin) -
Ever since I first understood the split break, I've been an advocate, and I've never fallen into the 11 hours per 24 trap. But you, Logs, probably know that already, don'tcha?
As for the company/career thing - yeah, I think they'll try some form of that argument. Honestly don't know if it'll fly. For one thing, I don't know of any other industry where an individual is held responsible for company property while he's off duty or asleep. I rather think it more likely they'll keep trying to pay by the mile - which can and (sorta) does permit the responsibility thing -
Ok Logs, clear this up if you would please.
I was under the impression that your drive time does indeed count as part of the duty day.
If I drove 11 hrs. I can't exceed 3 hrs. On duty time right? -
At the start of your day when you draw a line down to line 4 for the pre trip your 14 hr clock starts. If you start at 6 AM your day is OVER at 8 PM that evening.
During that 14 hr window you may drive NO MORE than 11 hrs. You can be on line 4 past the 14 hr window but no driving until a 10 hr break has been completed. -
That's what I thought.
You can however split the sleeper time provided it's 2 hrs, and flagged as such, correct? -
The split can only be 8 and 2 or 2 and 8. No other combo is allowed and keep in mind the 2 hr break no matter where it is taken goes against your 14.
Personally I don't split because its too confusing. -
Right. But there are occasions when it might be a good idea to split as in a delay of loading. I have done so on the advice of Logs and I haven't had a problem.
Logs, I see you're lurking on this thread. No doubt coming up with your sage advice -
What i was saying (I beleive without re-reading through everything) is
Look at my examples. I hope it works out ok???
DOT doesn't say you only can work 11 & 14 hours in a 24 hour period.
They state in a 14 hour period you can not drive more than 11 hours. After that 14 hour (or sooner) you must stop and take a 10 hour break!
Does this clarify what I was saying? Many drivers lose miles not knowing this bit of information. They think line 3 driving time should not total more than 11 for that log sheet.Attached Files:
Working Class Patriot Thanks this. -

You will take the driving time i between the 8 & 2 and subtract that from 11. That's how many hours you can drive after the 8.
I had driver today saying he could not take a load but guess what in the end if he split breaks he could take the load. Sure it's small miles but hey it's money and he isn't sitting there picking his nose or talking to us
Had we not split breaked he could not have done the load and he would be sitting there making no money and picking his nose
After this we can start a new thread in the regulations to discuss split breaking with pictures or anything. But start a thread if you want to learn! I am in the mood right now so better hurrry! I should be doing other things
Please understand I didn't have much room to type out really what I would like. But look at the pictures and study them. Them log grids are perfectly legal logs. It shows you stopping for 2 hours or longer is fine and it shows loading etc in there. But the issue was I wanted to get the point across. You lost 2 hours that day due to customer now take an 8 and you are getting them 2 hours back to finish the driving time you didn't get to finish. The only issue is payroll cut off when the load delivers.
Not sure what happend to the images. However i can post in the regulations thread.Attached Files:
