ERM I call it kind of obselete.

Take this morning we had forecasted a storm front into Ok, TX, MO and arkansas days ago And it developed proper on time less two hours early. Ive tracked it and made a thread at the time Norman Ok suffered a tornado wrecking a casino according to someone else posting about it.

Weather situations are getting pretty precise these days, sometimes a week ahead of the event.

They know pretty much how deep a snow will get at a particular elevation in the mountains before you get to Reno eastbound. Hydrological and other modeling runs every 6 hours in real time. When I look for tornados threat here in Arkansas, the modeling 6 hour runs get really precise as the time of expected outbreak hour and date approaches.

I use the same term anywhere. If it is safe it's a haven. Thus ergo a camp spot. Even if it's a patch of dirt above the river on 322 a few miles prior to 15.

And a 8000 gallon tanker of propane that could cremate downtown.... Or chlorine gas that would kill everyone in bed at 3 am theoratically... etc etc etc.

I remember a hazmat leak after a collision on 78 and 81 back in 91 I think it was... PA DOT went APE closing everything between Frystown, Scranton and Harrisburg. That effed my delivery and caused alot of yelling on my dispatcher end. What do you mean you cannot be on time? WHAT THE EFF IS THIS? YOu stupid or something child.... (That is a moment to start looking for another employer which I did in 3 days...)

The term "safe haven" refers explicitly to explosives. You are not allowed to leave certain class explosives unattended at any time, except at a "safe haven" which is a secured area under watch at all times.

As dangerous as other classes of hazmat may be, the regulations are specific for explosives.

I understand the situation as presented by you. I also did not forget the rule regarding explosives. I wished to explain that in general speaking of manner, safe haven is a set of two words I use often when talking about trucking. But not under a explosives load.

I will consider that I have been reminded by you and others regarding the letter of the law regarding explosives. But would hate to argue that those two words are banned from being spoken to another person when trying to explain a concept of finding a safe place to park.

I understand 100 percent what your saying, I really do. And I have written safe haven on my log at least a handful of times to explain a very real reason of me moving past hours. The thing that's being said, is safe haven is not a "thing" for 98.8 percent of drivers. Everyone understanding and feeling the I can't park thing, move on and mark no shut down availability, stop 1. Even that's not a legal out, but it's explanatory.I think the the big take away, is write it correctly and protect youself,. The idea of safe haven is real, the legality for most is not, come on man,

I was meaning megas in general..that was obviously a case of the stupids from both the driver and the company..

For the record, I had a drop last night that ate up my 14hr clock. I was -4.5hrs on my 14 when I left the reciever who wouldn't allow over nights, so I drove myself to a truck stop 18 miles away.. using off duty drive mode. Completely legal btw.. (yes I legally drove 18.5 hours into my clock while working for a mega)

My Qualcom didnt self destruct and my truck was not destroyed by lightning bolts from the DOT gods.. Yes I even drive for a mega..

The billboard lawyers that think the trucking industry is their cash cow is why megas pay hundreds of dollars to tow a truck five miles for DOT break.

    If y
If you are not on a dispatched load and are using the truck for personal use like finding something to eat or somewhere to sleep you sure can. My job was over the moment I left the shipper, I was taking myself to a place to sleep, might be a truck stop or my home. Its unpaid personal use at that point, not for dispatched miles.

No you cant drive on off duty hours for something work related but you sure as hell can do it for personal use, like getting to a place to sleep or eat..

You cant do the samething if you are leaving a shipper, because at that point you are on a dispatched load, (you could still bob tail) but if that trailer is empty and you have no load, you can drive it all day, as long as its not work related. (Like you cant drive it to a drop yard because your company told you to, but you can drive it to a truck stop to get sleep, eat or even get a shower)

Example, today I was given permission to drive my company truck to my house 70 miles away on off duty driving. Now on my return trip tomorrow, I have to log the hours because I'll be going to pick up a trailer, which means work related.

Now your company might not allow it, but it's their rule, not the DOT's. Example my company limited od driving to 1hr a day but that's a company rule not a law. It took me longer than the hour, so I asked permission ahead of time from our log dept.
