I try to keep my eyes open, but I'm not seeing many young drivers like myself out there. Young as in 22. I assume its the "you need 2 years experience to get hired" deal. Has it always been like this due to insurance purposes? Are there any older drivers out there that started young and are still behind the wheel? What has changed in the past 10 20 30+ years in the industry. Speaking to drivers at truck stops, some say the industry has gone to $h!t. I don't see that, I always have a load, make decent money, and am home when I want to be..

im 23 and just started truckin not too long ago but your right you dont see alot of younger people out here. i think a big reason is that they cant take the lifestyle or being away from home

I started driving locally around my area when I was 16 and stepped up at age 18 and 21. Still out here doing what I know best. The industry has went backwards in some areas and forward in others compared to when I started 17 years ago. Do I agree with everything? Nope, but I just smile and make the best of things I can't change.

I'm turning 22 in aweek or so, I agree with you rugerfan, I think our generation doesn't want to go away from home unless its for college partying. Sure its awesome to play video games, but working is pretty cool too. You get to see new places meet new faces. Snowblind: my father says the same thing he wouldn't do anything else, when he stays home for a week or two he says he misses the coffee out on the road and misses his home away from home, aka the rig.

I also started in 1977 when i was 21. i think its alot easier to get a job now at 21 then back in 1977 when there wasnt a major driver shortage.

You are exactly right,They do not have the work ethics we did in the 70's and 80's.Too many think everything should be handed to them without them putting the effort into it.It is always nice to see younger drivers that do enjoy what they are doing, not just existing.

It was that way when I started in 1990. At age 23, there were a lot of companies that wouldn't look at me because of my age. "Insurance is 25". Still seems to be that way.
