Each morning after making my lucrative nightly out and back run, I climb into my beautifully appointed SUV and trek to a park near my upscale neighborhood that has a walking path beside a busy BNSF Chicago/LA line.
I'm always amazed at the volume of truckload freight that is on the rails (along with a few of the less fortunate LTL carriers). Todays list included; Schneider, Swift, Jb Hunt along with US Xpress, USA Truck and many refrigerated carriers as well. Included in this list were a huge number of England, Marten, Stevens along with several others. The England trailers were purpose built for rail transportation!
It's a wonder you unfortunates even have any freight to haul given the amazing volume of your freight that I see on the rails!
Between the coming influx of Mexicans and the ever increasing amount of your freight transported via rail, it looks as though you truckload drivers are going to continue to be decimated.
It makes me feel even more blessed that I made the choices I did and landed with a profitable LTL carrier 7yrs ago and was able to stay above the malaise that many of you are and always will be in.

Some of the mega carriers have been using rail for years. If you travel out west you can seen an entire train with Swift, Schneider, JB Hunt or a few others on rail. They can put a trailer on rail and get it close to it's destination for much less than they can have a truck to pull it. The problem is delivery time. A truck can pull a load across the country in 3 days or so. A team could do it in a couple of days. Rail can take 10 days to 3 weeks. There is still no good alternative to getting freight across the country in a timely manner other than trucks. We can't compete with rail on price, but rail cannot compete with trucks for service.
chalupa and Keepfrozzin Thank this. -

at least with the malaise of being an otr trucker--i still didnt end up living beside the train tracks
olphart, American-Trucker, Keepfrozzin and 4 others Thank this. -
And to think, even with all those trailers you see riding the rails, 70% of all freight is still moved by truck, while rail only holds 30%.
Keepfrozzin and Rollover the Original Thank this. -

I know my post will probably get "edited by an administrator"...
But, I really can't stomach pompous people, whose post is directly insulting 95% of the forum members.
"I'm awesome - your pathetic" mentality, get a life, seriously; your nothing but a truck driver too. Talking down to others, you act as if uber-cool LTL trucking is the equivalent to a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon.Last edited by a moderator: Apr 16, 2011
