Today was my first lesson, I havent driven a truck in 25 years. My instructor had me out on the road and parallel parking in about an hour.

    It was awesome.

    UPDATE:

Took my lessons and took my road test here in NY. Failed!
I had finished the test, we were around the corner from returning to the test area and I clipped the curb on a tight right turn, automatic fail. The DMV tester told me I did really well and in all probability I would have passed if not for the curb. He left with a see ya again in about a month. A $300 error.

    The Challenger Thanks this.

    Tony,

Good luck. You will pass the test next month and remember, failing happens to the best of us.

Them dang curbs; they jump out, hit a guy's wheel an then sit there looking all innocent. I think they're in cahoots with the examiner folks.... notice how cheerful the guy was about "see ya next month"?:biggrin_2559:

Thing about a big city like NY is that it's full of trucking jobs that are not necessarily OTR. The amount of freight that moves around within the city is staggering so Local Pickup/Delivery is always busy. Likewise things like garbage hauling, document shredding outfits, etc. Heck, the city has hundreds of trucks in it's employ. OTR is not always the only or best answer.

    Freebird135 Thanks this.

    2nd Update:

I passed the roadtest. I am now a CDL A newbie. Next step is to get the doubles and Hazmat endorsement that everyone seems to want experienced or not and then commence the search for a company that will train me.

Congratulations! Since you'll most likely have more than one trucking job in your career it's good to carry doubles/triples, hazmat and tanker. You never know what good job is around the corner and companies like endorsement holders. They are all simple test with a little study.

Hey Tony Congrats~~ on getting your A! Hubby got his last fall and is now working for one of the bigger companies (not any of the ''bad'' ones per what i have read but big enough) Best advise ask lots of questions to eveyone!! You will make many mistakes but consider them learning experiences and remember them experienced drivers they really know their stuff and have good stores to tell.
