    Sammycat,
Thanks and no response from Conway, but I update my profile on their website as I pass and add endorsements.

Passed my hazmat written test today I think that wraps it up for endorsements for now.

Congrats again Tony!! I have no idea it takes to hear back from companies- not sure if holiday weekend has anything to do with it either. Have you put in any other apps any other places?

    Sammycat,

I havent really started my search yet, In NY you have to wait 7 days before they give you your license and I wanted to add the endorsements that all of the employers seem to require. I went and had my fingerprints taken last night for the hazmat background check. Although they say that it will take a few weeks to verify that I am not a terrorist I will now start looking for a company that will take a student driver asap.

Tony LOL that is funny about fingerprints but I guess in today's day and age....Yeah I know about NY cuz I live here too (WNY took off my city to protect the innocent :biggrin_25522:
Just keep searching this site for companies so you get an idea- remember that some posts are by people mad they got screwed but on the other hand there seems to be a few companies that are the top of the sh*% list and there are common themes to what the driver write about. Check out the company websites too.

Hubby applied to several companies he got the names and apps from his CDL school. Lucky for him didn't take that long to get to ''orientation'' and was hired by that company (and they hire or did in Feb newbies). One company just randomly pulled applications and his was not one and he called and they said ''no reason'' I think the thing that sucks the most is this ''orientation'' you go to but are not hired. I can understand weeding out but .......never heard of nor have I ever had that- I was hired after the interview THEN started orientation. But then I am an RN ......

Keep plugging along keep us posted!!

Talked to a recruiter for Watkins and Shephard today, rejected because I took a private lesson package instead of the regular school. He said without a school diploma the insurance company would make it very difficult to hire me. during our discussion he said it might be possible to put an app in if I went back to the school and got reference letters from all of the instructors that I used as well as a letter from the school comparing the lessons that I received vs their school program and outlining what the differences were. That wasnt going to happen.

tony, your best bet on the island might be looking for something thats not otr. theres so many sand haulers and msw hauling companies around, and you would be home with your family each night. i dont drive an 18 wheeler, just a 10 for me, but i do carting, and i can tell you that there is an insane amount of 18 wheelers from all over pulling in and out of dumps all day. and they are almost always looking for new drivers. you can even try a company like Winter Brothers, they usually just haul from 1 transfer station to another, and i do know they are hiring, just not sure how much exp. they are looking for.

Yeah if you can stay off the road do it! If I lived there in NYC I would be driving local. I even looked into moving the family out but the rent alone is insane! So I'll stay here in Missouri until things look better but looking at craigslist I see some of the same jobs I see in the state employment site. There is a lot of local work that pays better than over the road! Keep looking for that good job that gets you home, has insurance (GOOD INSURANCE) and benefits and equipment.

    Thanks,

I would love to stay local but if I have to do otr I will. My kids are grown and my wife wouldnt mind me out of the house. I think the only one who will miss me is my dog. I have been looking for the local construction and hauling companies and havent seen any ads. I see Winters Brothers all over the place
so I will give the a call. I put an app in with Schneider today.
