You guys have almost done it!
You've almost convinced me to just take the plunge and buy a "big radio".
Through all these discussions about radios and amps and DK mods, etc., I've about decided the best solution for me is to just get a "big radio".
After all I've read so far, I'm leaning toward a General HP40W with no external amp.
If I'm understanding what I've read so far correctly, it seems that you get all the benefits of a General Lee with the added benefits of a built in amp in the General HP40W.
What do y'all think?
BTW, I hope all y'all "big radio" fans are happy now!![]()
You've ALMOST Talked Me Into Taking the Export Plunge!

That said.....A Cobra 25 or 29 with a little 2 pill Amp behind it will walk all over the General...poppapump1332, mike5511, Turbo-T and 1 other person Thank this. -
Well I've been trying to talk you out of not wasting your money, but ...
-
I wished I had never let "Dave" from Atlantic Coast Communications talk me into the setup and to letting him set my DK to 1 and "Peak and Tune" my radio.
It hasn't worked since.
So, hopefully I can get in to see either Ray in West Memphis or Chuck I-40, X 126 in TN who I trust and get it straightened out. -
I would focus on the 29 first, get it straight and have a good tech just tune it to legal specs and run the amp that way. The amp should take up to 10 watts without a problem, if it does, then the tech should know how to put an attenuation pad in the amp to bring down the power to where it should be.
Spending money on more equipment seems to be a long way around the barn to solve an easy problem that is aggravated by poor techs who don't know much other than to turn a screwdriver. -
Ugh... at the risk of the wrath of the general fans... If you are going down that road anyway... what about an RCI 2950 or something in that line. It's head and shoulders above the General Lee and before I get stoned... Yes most of the boards are made by a few manufacturers but the real test is in the quality control. RCI makles a better product.

General lee is a great loud talking radio but nothing is gonna beat a 25 or 29 cobra done right with a amp behind it.Its been proved time and time again.
jessejamesdallas, mike5511 and Turbo-T Thank this. -

Ugg... knew I would hear it from the general fans but...
Yes RCI has made radios under a few wrappers. BUT they do differ in quality. My bet is you might find an RCI in the shack of a serious ham but probably not a General. The final quality of a General is just not as good as the 2950. Audio... Most serious "radiophiles" are NOT interested in BOOMING audio. If that's your thing the RCI radios are easily adjustable.
Bottom line... The RCI and General radios are aimed at different customers. The General is aimed at the ready made, jacked up CB market. The RCI stuff certainly appeals to the same market but also works for those looking for a 10 meter radio at a lesser cost than some of the more expensive well known ham stuff (Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood, etc.).
