Trains may be the talk of the month, but trucking is still king of the road, ruling the freight moving game. The U.S. Department of Transportation recently reported that trucks were the primary method of shipping between the countries of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Trucks hauled in a healthy 58 percent of NAFTA freight traffic, while trains pulled only 15 percent. Freight moved by ship equaled 10 percent, and pipelines and air traffic accounted for 9 percent and 4 percent respectively.
An estimated 11 million trucks hauled approximately $970 billion worth of freight from our NAFTA neighbors into the U.S. last year, said the report. Around 6 million of them were from Canada, and 5 million from Mexico. The report was part of an update to the North American Transportation Statistics database, issued by DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
