I was a police officer for almost 4 years and was burned out as well. Graduated the academy when I just turned 21 and gave it up at 25. Got my CDL permit and my dad trained me how to drive. It's now been 6 months and couldn't be happier with my decision. The first month or so is very nerve racking, you worry about everything you do and drive way under the speed limit, but after that it's like second nature. You won't regret the switch

Go mark off a stake and paint it so you can see it. Place it about 60 or so feet away. This is how far it is from the average Driver's seat to the rear of their trailer. Driving forward is easy. You can't relate to how it feels to be that far from the back of that trailer when backing up. It can be done, but it takes practice.

I am an older lady, and I love driving semis. Wider turns for the offtracing. But other than that, forward is the same as any other vehicle. I never forget that I have up to 80 thousand pounds of deadly force in motion, so I keep a good following distance, and keep a way out if I need it. Schools will teach you the 5 points of the smith system. Backing is the hardest part of the job, and that clicks in just fine with some practice. Chinatown knows all the jobs, so take his advice if you need it. But check them out to make sure it's a good fit for your needs. Theres a flavor for every taste in this industry, you just have to look around.

Spend sometime at a truck stop just watching the flow. How we approach the fuel pumps. How someone backs into a spot. How we leave the lot and get onto the street traffic.

    A. Duie Pyle has their own cdl school and also has plenty of jobs around your area. Local and line haul jobs. Line haul pays really well.
Provide lodging and a paycheck while attending their school.

Actually had not thought of this. I've got some time to kill in the AM before I go to work and I have the Methner(Sethner) PFJ and TA right across from each other off of I-4. Might go there and do some watching for my own knowledge. Good advice

I might give this a try in a few days. I'm definitely a visual learner and this will probably put things into better perspective for me.
