So think about what you want to do when you get your own truck. Chances are if you have your own truck you'll be doing regional to OTR. Find a company that is in that type of work, flatbed, heavy haul, van, hazmat, reefer, etc etc. And apply. A couple of hills you have to climb for heads up, some companies will count military driving as experience, some won't, so you may be stuck driving for some crappy mega company making pennies for a year. After that with a good record you can typically get on at most places. 2nd hill will be Florida. Its absolutely horrible for trucking. Literally the highest insurance rates in the nation when you own your own truck and the market is saturated there with drivers. So when you get your own truck. You'll find it easy to get a load going home. But you're basically gonna pay to leave Florida.
Looking to get into trucking when I get out

Wespipes and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
Less than Load.
ODFL,(We did 7 years there), UPS etc.
Far more scheduled and higher pay.
Don’t miss out on that baby growing up.
There’s times a man has to be there for wife or children. Don’t be the guy 1,000 miles away driving for a company that says
“We’ll route you home when we can . . . “ -
blairandgretchen Thanks this.

More older hands in here can share stories of being too far away, when they were needed.
From your first post - I’d have recommended another career. If it’s really what you think will make you happy - then LTL or local it should be.
Family first. Be thankful you have it. Protect accordingly. -
blairandgretchen Thanks this.

Can someone explain the LTL system as it applies to home time and income to this hand?
Basically - scheduled runs - daily - drop and hook - good benefits/pay - team or solo - or local P and D (not recommended without experience). -
@Winanthony94 os/ow = over size/over weight.
