Maybe this varies from one company to the next. We have driver facing cams, and I have set mine off more than once, but never heard a word about it from management.
Coffey, D.Tibbitt and truckdriver31 Thank this. -
You likely jerked the wheel when reaching down for the phone and set it off.
And the reason that the company is so picky is if an leo saw you, that's an $11,000 fine to them. And a $2,750 fine to the driver.
And yes, reaching down to the phone, using it or not, is specifically part of the law.
What is the definition of using a mobile telephone?
The use of a hand-held mobile telephone means:
- Using at least one hand to hold a mobile phone to make a call;
- Dialing a mobile phone by pressing more than a single button; or
- Reaching for a mobile phone in a manner that requires a driver to maneuver so that he or she is no longer in a seated driving position, restrained by a seat belt.

What caused your phone to fall in the first place? You sure that didn't trigger the camera?Coffey, lovesthedrive, D.Tibbitt and 2 others Thank this. -
The cameras nowadays dont need a G-force change or hard stopping to be recording. The technology can see the driver and can tell if they are dozing off, looking away from the road, sense if a driver has a phone in their hands, or wearing a seatbelt.
The warning to termination basis is all company based as you already know, it sounds like your company is overly strict and anal about insurance.Aamcotrans, joshuapowell61, Coffey and 4 others Thank this. -
all camera's record on a loop. the loop is determined by how much storage it has before it loops back over. anything in that loop is recorded.

So your complaining that you got fired for being distracted by the phone. Yet if you killed some one because you couldnt pull over and stop driving to get the phone off the floor would be ok. Yup makes sense to me.
buddyd157, truckdriver31 and ZVar Thank this. -
