The tie-downs do not need to be 10 feet apart but you need to make the number and also a minimum of 50% of the load weight in WLL (working load limit) rating.

He wasn't saying it was needed placed, or within, any specific length.

Why does the word for get disregarded so easily? :D

One of these days I will be hauling 70 foot poles. There will be up to 22 feet overhang over the rear of the trailer so there will be no way to strap it down within the required 10 feet.

If I could thank this post more then once, I would.

You’re correct, I said nothing about strap placement.

The FMCSA does not say anything about placement, and neither did I.

The regulations state 1 securement FOR every ten feet or fraction thereof. That does not mean one strap every ten feet.

    I know you did not.
I was clarifying not arguing the point to educate a rookie (or someone who acts like one).
I have payed a $200 fine because I could not return for a court appearance to argue that exact point.

Sure there is. So you got 70' pipe on your 45' wagon, & 3 dunnage stacks. One near kingpin, center light, & over tandem or spread.
You'll need 7 tiedowns to satisfy the 70' of load & 1 penalty strap for no headboard.

I'd put 3 straps close to the kingpin dunnage stack, 2 near the center dunnage stack, & 3 near the tandem dunnage stack. That should keep you legal at least..

    kylefitzy and scottied67 Thank this.

No body mentioned the straps or chains you need wrapped around the loose over hanged part of the poles to keep them tight and from the bouncing around that causes the straps on the trailer to loosen. Just another reason to have a couple extra straps close to the ends and center on the trailer anyway even if they are a couple feet apart.

Here's how my boss wants me to secure the poles. 45 footers and 60 footers in the pics. I will take any and all advice from you guys to keep the public and myself as safe as possible. 45footers.jpg 60footers.jpg

    That looks good.
I would add the 2 extras. Just for that extra insurance. When hauling his drill pipe my Grandpa had always done that back in the 40 ft. trailer days.

Is that a small chain that hooks to the pipe stakes and goes under the pocket or is it one long chain running across from side 2 side? Or is it no chain at all? LOL I'm not knocking it, just cant see it that good in the picture?
