that means allot of different things to allot of diffferent people. I my younger days it refered to a driver that owned his own truck and trailer had no authority because back then trucking was regulated and only way to get athourity was to by some ones that went out of business. So he would by a truck and trailer and haul what he could with out athourity or (bingo card) permitsa now days. so he was a complete outlaw. Now days it refers to a person who over runns there log book runs over weight or just breaks the 1 on 10000 laws the feds have put on the industry in the name of safty that only realy amounts to revenue generation for the state troopers. But enough of my ranting. Basicly any one that doesn't conform to laws.

"Outlaw" implies that a trucker is running without authority, overweight, out of hours, etc.
A different term from the old days is "Gypsy Trucker". I always had the most respect for anyone who was successful as a true gypsy. They typically hauled exempt agricultural commodities with their own reefer. In addition to the challenges faced by all owner-operators, they bought and sold the produce they were hauling. They had to bargain with sellers and buyers of fresh produce to take their profit from the line haul. I think it is a lost art.
Another term from the old days is "hip pocket operator".Trucker Nunnery, nitetride379x, Maverick Griff and 2 others Thank this. -

operating outside the confines of the law.
out-law -
I remember a group of ‘outlaws’ that ran specifically from Hunt’s Point to Cali. Lost touch with most over the years, but definitely got memories of those times.
There was very little done within the confines of the law: from bypassing scales for various reasons, running various loads, speeding, no logs or authorities, etc, etc, etc.
Adrenalines ran high, trucks ran fast, parties ran hard.Last edited: Jul 23, 2020

Some team trucks still run "outlaw" because when they do drops or pick ups, the driver in the sleeper berth assists with the drop but doesn't log that time. Dollar General is probably the best example. If they get inspected and DOT looks at their logs, they lie and say only the driver unloaded.
Hopefully the driver realizes he needs to say that, if he goes off duty then he needs to say the employees unloaded for him.
Most new drivers don't understand most of that though. So they are outlawing without even realizing it. So if a driver outlaws, but doesn't realize it, is he still an outlaw? LOLaustinmike, BUMBACLADWAR, nitetride379x and 1 other person Thank this. -
