Hello there, my boyfriend and I are interested in the trucker lifestyle and are considering Covenant as well. Problem is, neither of us have our CDLs...any advice on the best route to getting them based on y’all’s experience? We’re in Los Angeles. Also, this thread has been extremely helpful...so thanks to everyone that contributed

I been going to college part time for Software Engineering and when I get done I'm done with trucking. Does Vegas have good jobs for Engineering?

I was really happy with the route I took. Hubby and I went to school separately from an employer. No contract to stay with a company you hate that way. Covenant pays an extra 100 bucks a month to pay for your student loan. And bonus! There's a govt program that pays for retraining into certain fields, of which trucking is one. Accredited trucking schools or your local unemployment office may be able to help you.

Thanks so much, we were considering CR England and CRST but exactly like you said, we don’t want to have to sell our souls for a year just to get our CDLs. I’ve read tons of reviews about company-sponsored CDL training and it was stated over and over again that pay and conditions are unbearable but if you break your contract early, you will owe $6000 for the training you received. We’re really not trying to go that route.

Question, for the $100 student loan reimbursement, do we have to show proof of having taken out a loan? We aren’t willing to take out a loan but found a school that we could pay for with our savings but we’d basically be broke after that. It would be nice to know we would be recouping payment for trucking school.

I got a full grant, and they still pay me the 100 extra per month. These guys on the forum are tired of hearing me brag about covenant, so private message me if you'd like to chat.

My advice...... Find a company that is mutually agreeable to both of you. Sign up, get your training individually, team up after the required training, learn how to make money. It will take time. The concept of three people in one truck is ......well...... unfathomable to me. 6 weeks with my trainer was difficult. I liked him, we got along just fine, we ate together on occasion, he was a good guy.......I couldn't wait to get off of that truck and go Solo!!! 3 people in an 8'x8' box!!!!! Eff no!!! Remember....you two are going into business together. You will each pull 12 hour shifts. One drives, one sleeps.......day after day after day after day............ Please get the idea out of your head that this will be some sort of Romantic RV excursion........it won't. If you can both make it 6 months without hating each other's guts, you will have a chance. If you make it a year......you have probably figured it out and have a chance of banking some serious cash!!! Good Luck.

My experience training as a team was awesome! We got along with our trainer, and with an upper bunk net, sleeping was not an issue. Yeah hubby and I shared the bottom bunk on resets. But we trained as a team, because we are driving team. We learned a lot, and we are high level drivers in our company.
