Renew a lapsed CDL after several years?

    Hello, I searched for info on this topic but they were all for short term expired or revoked licenses.

    I haven't had a CDL for around 13yrs now, I wasn't using it and it cost more money to renew it so I let it go. I'm looking now to get back into driving, does anyone know am I back to "square one" or do I just need to take some written tests? Thanks.

    You can do it yourself by taking all the tests at the DMV, but you'll need a truck for the road test and you can't drive it to the DMV. A licensed cdl-a driver will have to drive it there for you.

    Just tell them you've been driving a reefer and waiting to get unloaded for the last 13 years. Wouldn't shock many people.

    Ah. If I start all over I think I'll forget it. I live in MI.

    This only for a Class B, does that matter? (I started with B then got my A 10yrs later)

    Don't give up; even during a recession, there's plenty of good paying trucking jobs.
    Get the Class-A license because even some box trucks require a Class-A license.

    Just curious, which ones? I always thought B covers all straight box trucks, and A was just for trailers.

    Depends on length or weight. Don't know all the details.
    Some require "air brake" endorsement and some don't.
    On job ads, many box truck jobs require Class-A cdl and some will take Class-B or Non-cdl Class-C.
