Another one to look up. Ernie Pyle. He had magazine articles every week during the war. Also a couple books. He was famous. Ask any person old enough. They would remember Ernie. Great writing. He would spend time with troops, in the war zones. He died from a sniper bullet on a Pacific Island. His remains have been buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The Marine Corp thought so much of him. They tried to claim he was buried in the Marine Cemetery on Okinawa. He was there. But didn't die there.
Many things could be mentioned. He'd pick out a soldier. The article that week would be about him. One thing impressed me. He wrote that everyone said that the ground soldiers were at the top of the social ladder in the war. Everyone, Air Force, Navy, Artillery, Tank, everybody...
