After years of struggling in other jobs and really being stubborn about getting my CDL, I finally broke down and tested this week and passed. No endorsements, and I know that’ll be money in the bank once I obtain those.
Anyways, I got a job offer as a UPS driver. However, I have to start as a preloader and they will find me to go to their training. Then I’ll be permanent driver. The problem is I spent all this time and hardship, quite frankly money, to get my CDL only to be a UPS package delivery driver. Would you suggest I throw it out and just get with a local company that need OTR drivers or stick it out and try for one of UPS’s driving positions? (I am aware of the fact they will look for experience for those so if I did stick it out how would I be able to get tractor trailer experience?)
I know it’s long winded!
Also, if anyone knows of any oil rigs taking newly licensed drivers, please let a brother know haha.
Finally made it guys.

If you have the patience, stick it out with UPS. You'll have a big fat retirement check some day and good benefits.
My nephews son did it that way and making great money now that he's driving. Don't know how long it took him after being a loader in the warehouse.Coffey, Sirscrapntruckalot, MACK E-6 and 2 others Thank this. -

Lots of decent opportunities around the Birmingham area.

Don't know about the oil rigs, but can give you a dozen or more names of companies hiring new cdl grads in your area for local/regional/OTR. -
You really should get all the endorsements and a TWIC card.
