So I did get out to the MF today. Last update the sediment bowl was leaking. So I got it apart. I applied a layer of permatex to the cork gasket (both sides). After waiting 40 mins and it still hadnt set up I figured I needed to work on other things. Like unloading the new to me antique. Hung the plow on the truck and attempted to smooth out some of the mud ruts. Removed the plow and went back to the MF 40 tractor. Part of my frustration with working on the tractor. Is that the loader frame blocks my view of where I need to work on the tractor.![]()
So since the permatex still hadnt set up I went to work on the JD.
Well hmm. How do you use a short jack on a high crop tractor?

Turns out I had a piece of oak 2x6 the wife had been using for a wheel chock.

Hmm that oak has some flex. At least I have some jack stands

Now for the next headache. It was 430 in the afternoon (1630 for you military lovers) and I was running out of steam. If you look at the last pcture above you will see there are some regular slotted bolts on the backside of the wheel. I need to replace the tires on this JD. The hubcaps are bolted on from the backside. No cutting torch, though I do have a plasma torch I can wash the heads off. Then I suould be able to remove the bearings to get the wheels off the tractor. Tiny wheels. 5.00-15 It looks to be VW beetle tires on it presently
What if it Snows?

Got to love listening to audio books.
Things that make 500 mile treks seem shorter, at least we aren’t on foot.

Well, I noticed a front wheel seal seeping a bit, had to top it off, sprayed it all good with brake cleaner, and been watching it. Should have changed it Today. Just too wore out. Now I’m all showered and see it’s gotten worse. Downtime will cost more than a Shop. I’ve had bad Luck 3 times with wheel seals done at Shops. Twice burning up bearings, once a steer spindle. So now I have to decide where to fix it. Got everything including new bearings and races. In the past, I’d make a run for home. Not worth risking getting DOTd and shutdown for now. Not surprised, been expecting it. Left side went bad last year. Bearings were falling apart. It was too tight. Should have done the job myself in the first place. Paid a Guy to replace both front bearings, races, seals , shoes a couple yrs ago. Since bearings were original pushing 2 million miles. New ones only lasted less than 200k.
