greener grass

    People say you need a year experience but many companies will hire you with 3 months experience.

    I know you are trying to be strong and get some experience but I’d be furious if they lied to me about the pay just to get you in drivers seat.

    I was told that the company owes me nothing because my log was offduty/sleeper

    So with Schneider you have to violate HOS to get detention pay

    Well...or eat into your 70-hour clock by staying on-duty not driving during unpaid detention time. Which is just lovely.

    I bet that's an excellent way they have figured out to keep their drivers off duty. Pay them even less so they literally HAVE to log... "conservatively."

    Because I don't know about you, but if I sat there for the first two hours not getting paid, then got paid $10 for my third hour, I'd have ####ing puppies over that $3.33 per hour pay rate.

    What could a man DO with all that money?

    As to the overarching question of "is the grass greener," I'd say it depends on whose grass you're looking at.

    Schneider was my first company. I didn't find their grass to be particularly green. As you're also finding out.

    Yellow had very green grass, but then they merged with Roadway and the whole lawn rotted away.

    ABF has quite green grass, but you have to work hard to keep it that way.

    My current company is the one I'll happily retire from, so that's some mighty green grass.

    But...don't look at other mega carriers and the like. Those aren't careers, no matter how much people insist they are. Maybe in economically depressed areas where the cost of living is low they can be, but here in Chicago I could maybe afford a studio apartment working at a mega.

    Figure out what's important to you. Top three things. Try to make them tangible. Things like "respect" are subjective. Are you going to let one bad manager chase you out of a good company?

    Home time. Pay. Retirement. Professionalism (different than respect). Schedule. Proximity to your house. All these things can be of varying importance to you.
