Unless the camers your dealing with are magic, if they start recording when a event takes place they would miss most of the who ,when, where, and why. Cameras loop record, that means they record a predetermind length, 15 seconds to 3 minutes, when the memory card gets full they simply record over the oldest file as long as the file is not flagged. Wehn an event happens (accident, swerve, etc..) they mark the flag prior and the current file there recording so they won't be over written.
Think about it they have to record all the time in order to their job, which is document events surrounding a incident or accident.
I have found that in most cases drivers over reaction is unfounded, although I have had them used against me by Kemira Water Solutions, but only after a RAT called in because I passed him on a empty deert road.
I don't peticulary care for the inward facing camera. I also had an ocassion that another employer Valley Bulk Inc, tried to accuse me of falling asleep resulting in an accident, and the camera proved I was wide eyed when the steering in their truck failed. So you never really know, I'm good with the forward facing , not so much with the inward facing, which I would cover with gaffers tape when parked anyway.
But they both definately record 100% of the time, but only flag when there's an event.

^^^^correct. And if you don't like cameras, stay home under your blankie with the shades pulled down, because cameras are everywhere. Banks stores gas stations , restaurants, bars, any business you walk into, in fact you're on starting in the parking lot when you get out of your car ! Only safe place is a public restroom but they got you going in and coming out.

I’ll never agree to an inside facing camera. What happens between me and the sheep blow up doll is private

Jesse Matthew Jr learned this the hard way back in 2014. He was a serial murderer that was caught because of cameras all over the area where he grabbed a young UVA student Hannah Graham. Then once they got his DNA they matched him to some other murders.

I agree about the cameras in general. I have even discussed this in many threads over the years. They are everywhere and you should assume you are on video. I just contend there is a huge difference between a surveillance camera on the wall of a business and one pointed at me. That's where I would draw a line in the sand. It's a great thing I am retired, this is something that would make me want to retire were I still driving!

Just be thankful you're not a movie star or Justin (yawn) Beiber ! Pappa ratzi following you EVERYWHERE ! To the store, to the restaurant, to the airport, to Hawaii etc and taking your picture never ending ! Now that would be a valid camera complaint, right ?

It's the price of fame. I was speaking to a cop the other day about all this recording of cops happening. He asked me one question. Sometimes being a cop is dirty work. In a way, we are society's trash collectors. Would you want a camera pointed at you while you are doing something like this? When I was an active driver all I was was just a "lunch box toting Joe" doing my job. Having a camera stuck up in my face during said job would have been offensive to me. I was a professional driver. I make my pickups and deliveries safely and on time and NOT violate part 395 in the process. I don't need big brother monitoring me like this EVEN if it's only triggered by "events". I rather go flip burgers at Joe's bar and brothel!

I really dont have a problem with them, dont like them alot, but they are the way of things to come. If someone gets their jollies watching me pee into a Gator Aid bottle I dont care, thats the most exciting thing in my cab. Generally Iam doing what Im suppose to be doing, where Im suppose to me doing it at. (Bad Grammar I'm sure). You can reverse the wires on the camera, and that will take care of that.

No, but if you yell really loud into your CB: TRUCKER CLOCK!!! WHO WANTS IT???!!!, the camera might trigger.

The output shaft of the steering gearbox according to CHP inspection, was listed as mechanical breakdown.
