Hey all,
We're typically a flatbed outfit but starting to haul some reefer loads. I know my forum name says different but hey, you never know what you end up doing.
Anyway I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to prepare for lumpers. Cash, credit? I have know idea how a com check works. What do I need to do to be prepared to pay? Or what service should do I need to set up? Thank you all in advance for any input.

At my company we use EFS.
I text dispatch with amount and they give me a authorization code.
Capstone does it over the phone .
A few places still use a check.
One place the guy went to the bank and cashed it before he would give me a reciept.ReeferOhio Thanks this. -
Efs checks and comm checks. A lot of places have gone digital though, where all I need to do is ask my company for a money code which they register the amount I send them to. If you end up using efs get that app, it’s a lot quicker that way to authorize / put money on a check

If you're using a company issued fuel card there should be a way to use that to load up an EFS, comdata check or whatever with funds. That's a big, IF your company loads funds on there so you can do that. Talk to somebody in your company office to find out if they put funds on your card for that and how to do it. Really easy. Your company may or may not charge you a small fee to load these checks. There's probably an 800 number on your fuel card that you call and just follow the prompts. You can get free blank EFS or comdata checks from any truckstop or as somebody said the lumper service may not even need a paper check and do it all electronically.
Alternatively many lumpers will accept payment from your personal credit card. A few still accept cash but most don't and are moving away from accepting it. I use my credit card most times to avoid the $1 fee it costs me to load an EFS check using the company issued fuel card. Plus it's a helluva a lot faster using a credit card than it is going thru a dozen phone prompts to load an EFS or comdata check.
You may already know how the game goes but just in case you don't. Lumper fees are always reimbursed to the driver as long as you do your job right. If you're running brokered freight always let the broker know there is a lumper fee, how much, and quickly email them a copy of that receipt. As a rule I ALWAYS make them send over an updated rate con with additional lumper money added onto it after I've emailed them a copy of the lumper receipt.
You can ask for and use the broker's money to cover lumpers but most most of them charge you a fee for the favor. You're better off paying yourself and getting reimbursed.

As far as fuel card I am through NASTC, I believe that card is issued through fleetone, so just give fleetone a call for EFS?
I already have a couple direct companies for freight they are large so getting freight as the small guy (few trucks) can be a challenge sometimes, so I'm sure I'll broker sometimes. Thank you for the responses. -
Capstone is using the Relay app. I think there is a way to set up your company so that lumpers will be automatically deducted.
With a NASTC fuel card you should be able to get money codes on the fleetone website. -

Not sure is NASTC is EFS or not. It's been several years since I had it for a fuel card and I never dealt with lumpers back then either.
