The only thing you have to do to cross back into the USA is take 10 off if you’ve gone over USA hos while in Canada. 24 years, I’ve never once been questioned about driving 13 hours in Canada by a US dot.

By law you are to hold the last 14-days worth of paper logs as you step into the chicken coop (scale house) for the interview. Pamela noted how she was casually informed by the acting officer to withhold logs from a certain time period in order to prevent unnecessary discovery. There are coopers out there who are co-operative and work with us to inform and educate. The Police are out there for a reason too. The coopers have expectations that your filling of paper logs be proper, full spelling of name, mileage, plate and trailer # etc., while at the same time limiting that input. The comprehension of all rules of engagement professes a certain quality in a person. As truck drivers we need to instill that quality within ourselves to demonstrate our competence. And that's on YOU! The schools don't teach any of it.

You have to provide 14 days in Canada. 8 days in the USA.

I'm uncertain that's technically legal, but I'm certain of many unwritten rules within the game that instill informal co-operation. I personally wouldn't take a chance on it, but I know many have and still do. In case of a road accident you could be liable for damages since the law holds no regard for rules unwritten.

Thank you. This is the Canook side of the forum and I advise drivers retain 14-days worth of logs, despite USA rules we need 14 as soon as we cross back up. Once again, I propose standardization to avoid unnecessary mess, but .. I'm just one guy.

As previously stated as long as you are in compliance with the US rules when you enter the US, making sure you took your 10 off and have not driven over 11 and the 30 min before 8 hrs your fine.

Most don’t realize you need to provide 14 days in Canada because you need to be able to prove 24 hours off within 14 day rule. Unlike in the USA, where as long as you don’t exceed your 70 hour cycle in 8 days, you can work every day for weeks on end.

As ling as your total 7 days are ok, your good to go. You need 10 off before you cross so if you know your crossing sometime tomorrow, take 10, then run from that day until you cross back into canada, on US HOS. As ling as it all adds up your ok. I've done it for 20 years, MANY inspections in Maine, and those guys dont let ANYTHING slide. They will invent their famous "Chafed brake hose" if they have to, just so you dont get a decal.

One thing…….cuz I have this argument all the time with my safety guy. You don’t need 10 off to cross the border. You can split your off duty/sleeper birth ONLY if you haven’t exceeded US hos. If you have, then yes. You have to take 10 off to reset your daily hos.
This is one of the reasons I like elogs. Elogs taught me this. Because they’re programmed not to let you violate hos on either side of the border. All you or I need to do is pay attention to what the elog does, to fully understand what you can and can’t do.
