New CDL Requirements - Any way around it?

Has nothing to do with hiring shady drivers or skirting the law. I bet 75% of the drivers on this forum never went to a school for a cdl. School don’t make you anymore a better driver. Just one more regulation the industry didn't need. And in the long run because of the extra cost it won’t make it any better for the industry.

 

And if we are honest we all know this is another nail to put in the coffin of o/o’s and small companies.

 

From reading on here for years, the majority of the posts on schools were they taught the bare minimum to pass the test and that was it. Now in this thread schools are the greatest and the only way anyone should get a license. So let me ask are the schools going to get better all of the sudden? Are they going to be inspected quarterly and held to a higher standard than in the past? Are they going to be made to give a certain amount of time behind the wheel? Or are they going to continue to operate shady training schools as they've always done. I've read hundreds of posts on how my school didn't teach me anything and I didn't get to drive, the trucks were always broke down, etc. Now the same schools are required and they're all the sudden better??
These are honest questions.

 

Oh, come on, that was a low blow. How many drivers run their rigs into innocent people and kill them, but boy howdy, they can pixx in a bottle. I feel bad for the person, it's going to FURTHER kill small businesses, then what? I'll tell you what, they will have to charge more to break even, further exasperating the inflation issue, and people will stop using the service, operator goes out of business. Great plan, America,,,

 

Talking about small businesses. I know this is a about a bus company but here's a thought. I think some small trucking companies need to go under. It's too many. That way the owner operators and small businesses who do things right won't have their revenue watered down.

 

Like me I was grandfathered in before CDL
Came to be. I know the trucking schools around me are almost 10k now. Didn’t keep up on this regulation. Wife was going to go get her permit and I was going to train her.
Got a big NO!, from MVD.
So called some schools and not only 10 k to teach her but they only train with automatic transmission. Don’t want the restriction on CDL. Community college is almost 11k for the course. Only automatic as well.
Still looking for a school so she can learn the manual. She knows how. Just some more bureaucratic B.S.

 

I would check with US Custom harvesters. I have wondered about this my self.

 

The trainers at Stevens Transport's school explained it pretty well. The material that the government uses for the requirements to get your CDL. Have not been updated since the 70s. So they're not the real world.

Because of that. During training. They can only teach you to pass the test. It's during orientation and out with a trainer. That you learn the rest.

"To teach you to pass the written test. We tell you a canary is blue.
To teach you to pass the driving test. We tell you it's red.
Once you pass. We finally tell you it's yellow."

So to add on. Do the new requirements make it any better? IMO no. But anyone who has the impression. That CDL school is to teach how to drive. Has the wrong idea. Learning to drive is with your first company.

That's why you need to choose carefully. I was very fortunate to go out with Stevens. Their training requirements are top notch.
