    Because Saffer needs to worry about more than one load. Say his load has plenty of time before delivery to go trailer hunting, but if he doesn't bring in an empty it will make the next load late.

    Or the customer was just promised more trailers, so if he bobtails in the customer will be apoplectic.

    When drivers make "executive decisions ", it can have knock on effects that will result in more micromanagement.

    Maybe the micromanaging, but when I looked at Marten a while ago, they had a staggered pay scale. The longer the run, the less per mile. But on a positive note...their trucks have APU's. Guess Deland's No. 2's excuse about them adding too much weight was just typical management bull-#### because they pick up a lot of the same places we do...and I don't think they get lighter loads than us.

    They need to keep a certain number of empties to preload. Sometimes they pull and stage the order only to find they don't have a trailer to put it on.
