I never thought about asking this question but ever since they came out with DEF, I've had trouble with the nozzles tripping off with every truck I have ever driven. You start to pump your DEF fluid and it's as if you are full and nozzle trips off. Somehow or another it eventually starts to flow but I can't seem to figure out what makes the difference.
Has anyone figured out how to pump DEF so that it doesn't trip off until it's full?
What is it with DEF pumps?

They get dropped on the tip where the trip sensor feeds so it doesn't work right anymore and they never replace them. Just look at the end of the nozzle and you will probably see it

Sometimes the end is damaged. Sometimes the end has dried chunks of def on it. Out of habit I will tap the tip of the nozzle on the curb to break off any chunks before I put it in my tank. And usually I have to have the nozzle flipped upside down for it to flow good, it must be the way the fill neck is on my tank.

I sometimes have the same problem. I usually get DEF whenever my gauge gets below 3/4 tank. That way, if I can't get it, for whatever reason, on that fuel stop, I still have enough for my next fuel stop, or 2. So, when I run across this issue, I'll usually just quit trying to fill it up and instead, get DEF on my next fuel stop. So, I'll end up only getting 1/2 a gallon.
That's how I deal with the problem at least.ncmickey, Another Canadian driver, JoeyJunk and 3 others Thank this. -

When I used to fill up that crap I'd start gently squeezing it so little bit comes out. After few seconds I'd increase pressure and squeeze little harder. Don't squeeze trigger all the way. Try gently squeezing it until it slowly flows out. I also would hold nozzle with one hand while holding hose in the other so that there's slack. Seemed to help.
