The electronic dash allows companies to save money because they can make modifications in software without having to retool. Even the old analog appearing dash’s actually were pc board mounted.
It’s weird seeing a 389 with the digital dash, just doesn’t look right.

Yeah I regularly go into the Peoplenet settings and dim mine for night and early morning running.

D3110AE1-199F-4C81-B0E0-CE4FD0462027.jpeg I’m not a fan. Mine has frozen up twice, and my fuel readings glitch every now and then. Also going down the road it will dim and brighten itself sporadically. In my opinion the digital dash is just one more thing to go wrong and be in the shop for.

On the bright side, they gave up trying to make a cupholder that doesn't rattle. Molded in again.

And they got the steering wheel on straight too, so there's that.

Actually, I like the 23. Seems more solid than the 21, not a rattle trap.

Mirrors aren't for trainees though. They'll lose more on claims than they are ever going to make on fuel savings.

I've only driven a 23 Pete 4 or 5 times (slip-seat LTL) but I love them so far. We'll see how the digital dash holds up over time.

If you guys could have seen how dirty and nasty the truck I had today was.... Gross. I wouldn't trade LTL for anything, but #### some of these guys are nasty.

EDIT: Actually forgot the mirrors. Completely agree they're too small, especially for LTL when I'm backing into tight docks sometimes 10+ times a day. WAY too small!! I was actually dumbfounded when I first saw them.

I've heard that there's such a backlash over these worthless excuses for mirrors that Magnum has started ordering them with regular ones. I saw a brand new one that didn't even have decals on it yet with regular mirrors.

Hey sorry for my late reply, been a little while since I've logged on. Yeah the 2023 is still doing great! Only problems I've had mechanically is the dash froze up 2 or 3 times and that happened 2 days in a row. This was I guess about a month after I got it, I can't remember exactly. The problem resolved itself each time after I shut the truck off for a while. I was very lucky in that I had time to stop and take an hour or two break and wait for the problem to resolve itself. No problems with it since.

Not trying to make a joke or anything, but I also I looked up the definition of ergonomics and it says:

the study of people's efficiency in their working environment.

Not quite sure what you're talking about regarding the truck, when you use that word?

I need to mention I'm not a mechanic and I have no mechanic experience or skills. I can pre trip a truck and I understand simple mechanical stuff when it's explained to me, but that's about it. Having said that, I think the truck rides great. I think it pulls great. I have no problems with the Paccar motor. Before this truck I had a 2020 truck like you have now. The 2020 had no engine problems and was never in the shop for anything engine related. And I drove it for 7 months so the miles were in the high 200's when I turned that truck in to get into this new one.

As for the turning radius, I have no problems at all with it.

As for the storage space, the layout of the truck and all the buttons and stuff are the exact same (or if there's any different buttons for the controls of the truck it's minor stuff that I can't remember the difference between the 2020's and 2023's). Sleeper unit appears to be the same size as well. Everything is pretty much the same except for the mirrors.

And yes, I agree with others. I'm not a fan of the small mirrors. As truckers, the more line of sight that we have to do this job the better. I don't understand why someone would think that it's a good idea to give drivers less visual space to do our jobs, which is what the effect of the smaller mirrors are. That said I've gotten used to it, but I do have to adjust the mirrors all the time everytime when I adjust the seat. When backing I have to be careful as well because the smaller mirrors reduce your line of site so much compared to the normal sized mirrors. It's not a huge deal to me, but seeing as how Magnum hires brand new CDL drivers, I wouldn't really recommend that the company puts them in a truck with small mirrors like this. I couldn't really imagine driving a truck with mirrors this small when I was brand new, although to be fair I had no experience with oversized vehicles whatsoever before I started driving a truck.

I guess I could sum up my response as to how I like the 2023 truck is that I like it a lot and I'm very thankful for it. I'm the only one who has lived in this truck. Yes Magnum has someone/a company come clean the trucks before switching them out, but there's only so much you can do when a truck has 200 something thousand miles on it and has been lived in by probably two handfuls, if not more, individuals. For example, the first 2020 truck that I was in, the mini fridge had a fish smell in it that just would not go away no matter what I did (soap and water, baking soda, etc. etc.). So, it's nice not having to deal with any stuff like that in this new truck.

Look I know it probably sounds like I'm cheerleading hard for this company with the few posts that I've made on the forum. I try to be as neutral as possible when I write. In my last post I aknowledged that drop and hooks versus live loads/unloads can be a positive or a negative, meaning that I aknowledged the poster who I replied to had good points. So, I'll do the same with this post in saying that @cdavis188, you probably have good points in what you are saying. It's just some of what you wrote has gone over my head because it sounds like you have way more mechanical experience than me and you know about motors and how they work and all that. If you really know your stuff mechanically, I can see how you would be more qualified to make judgements and opinions about different types of motors and different types of trucks than I would. Which is why I mentioned that I know very little about mechanics.

I am just judging the truck for very basic things: The truck is not breaking down on me and hasn't been in the shop once since I got it with 35 miles on it. It pulls (and turns) good in my opinion. I have plenty of storage space. I have an APU that I can run to my heart's delight. I have an inverter for cooking food and for plugging in electronics. I have a mini fridge. I have tons of outlets in the front of the truck as well in the sleeper birth of my truck to charge my electronics, as well as to charge my big cooler that plugs into the cigarette lighter up front. My truck looks good, I'm not driving around in junk. It's pretty common for me to be driving in my 2023 truck and attached to a 2 year or newer trailer (including the new 2023 trailers that we have now). When I got into this truck, I sent pictures of it to all of my friends and family because of how excited I was. I am proud of what I drive and it makes me feel good about myself (as dumb as that might sound to others).

That's what I'm judging my truck on.

When I first started in the trucking business with a different company several years ago, the truck that I had was such a terrible truck. Not only mechanically (it was constantly in and out of the shop), but also because it wasn't even cleaned out when I got into it, it was absolutely filthy. I do not like filth and refuse to live in filth.

I remember that. I remember where I came from in the trucking business. I have no complaints with my 2023 Peterbilt. None.

I don't know what else to say. I'm just so grateful for the new truck, I still cannot believe they let it sit for 23 days when I took my vacation to Europe in mid July/early August. Just an overall great company that I'm thankful to have found.

They have some Volvos 2022 and I drive a 2023 Volvo. Fewer new trucks parked at the Fargo yard than a couple months ago. They also have some 2023 Peterbilt day cabs and 2023 Freightliner cascadia day cabs. There was a couple 2019 Freightliner sleeper tractors but they have disappeared.

By ergonomics I'm basically talking about the layout of the dash and its features. How easy they are to reach, and if someone would have to crane their neck to see all the gauges. I didn't have an issue with gauge placement in my trainers '21 but the button placement was a joke. Seemed like Peterbilt just placed buttons and switches at random. The buttons and switches in my Freightliner are all right there in a row between the radio and brake poppers. No need to crane your head around to see what button you're pressing, but maybe I'm just used to all the buttons being easily accessible and in plain sight.

But I'll say that Magnum maintains their equipment very well. I've pulled brand new 2022 trailers but no 23's yet. I'm partial to Carrier reefers too. The ThermoKing's are okay but they rattle my truck more than i like. I'll still pull them without complaint though. Pulling a 2021 TK right now. But if I'm in the yard to grab a trailer i try to find a Carrier first.
