FxF is similar but a little more structured, although it probably sounds confusing.

Road and City are completely separate, except at very small barns they’ll use the junior city driver to cover road driver vacations. I’m not too familiar with the city side, but there are some drivers on call who can come in early to cover vacations or come in late and do some extra deliveries and pickups that don’t otherwise fit on a route. They also don’t bid on routes, only tractors and start times, although they mostly run the same routes every day.

On the road side, the extra board is on call from 5-9pm. They cover vacations/call ins/extra runs. If your run is cut, you go to the extra board and you may not necessarily find out until they call you. Dispatch always calls in seniority order, even if you have a bid run that gets cut, you’ll slot in to the extra board with your seniority. If your barn also has daytime linehaul, there’s another call block from 5-9am. Extra board drivers have to be available for the AM call block if they don’t take a run from the PM call block. PM bid drivers who get canceled and sent to the extra board do not have to wait for the AM call block if they don’t take a run. Also worth noting they need to give you 2hrs minimum from when they call to when you need to be out the gate. None of that “oh you need to be here in 45min or I’m giving it to a junior driver” crap.

FedEx ground has slowed down. I pickup at Walmart for my p&d and the volume was cut in half for online orders. Also the linehaul weights have been down. My run used to have around 20k a night now it’s half that. People must be slowing down ordering.

It usually means you do not have an assigned route or start time. They can pretty much send you anywhere and call you in any time (or not at all). Typically you will fill in a spot when someone takes the day off to go fishing, or if there is way too much excess freight to an existing route.

I know Wal-Mart their most recent quarterly earnings were not very good and they laid off a bunch of white collar front office people of course big companies bloat them selves with unnecessary management and front office people anyway so there’s that, but I think things are slowing down.

Last night was the first night I had 2 trailers actually worth something 16K in the lead and 13K in the back. Lately our loads have been smaller too.

I have a question so I see these white freight liner sleeper cab trucks that pull doubles and sometimes actually a lot of times single 28' trailers for UPS and they have UPS logos on the door are those guys like some kind of sleeper team drivers for UPS parcel? What exactly do they do. I see them on the Ohio turnpike anyway pulling single 28' trailers a lot actually.

Is FedEx Freight more organized and better ran then say Estes? I always heard Estes was pretty easy outfit to work for, but they weren't always the most organized.

I have a question and I know you guys can answer this. FedEx freight is the largest LTL carrier in the county on JOCs board of Class I LTL carriers they are the largest carrier in terms of revenue and freight moved. They were formed in 2001 when FedEx bought out American Freightways, and then continued to buy out Viking and Watkins in the years following the initial purchase of American Freightways. The buy out of Watkins and Viking was to continue moving west and building there westward Empire.

UPS bought out Overnite in the east and Motorcargo in the west and that is what formed what is the now defunct UPS Freight funny thing is UPS Freight didn't last as long 16 years UPS never really wanted into the freight business and was never serious about it in my opinion it was just a loss leader to compete with FedEx, but FedEx obviously I think there heart was way more into the LTL business then UPS, UPS's heart wasn't in it.

It's hard for me to get a gauge from the message boards, but over all FedEx Freight good or bad? Freighthauler 87 on YouTube, worked at Estes for 3 years and then went over to FedEx and said it was night and day different from Estes in terms of organization.

Now I know there was a nice guy on the other forum who told me he worked for FedEx Freight in the city I believe for 7 years he had work for Daylight Donuts and said they were very good, but the original owners sold the company out sold out the private fleet to JB Hunt or one of those types of outfits and he worked at Sysco in Oklahoma and then went over to FedEx Freight and what ever happened and happened and he wasn't real hip on FedEx Freight and he ended up quitting FedEx Freight and going back to Sysco which isn't heard of much but when you get some seniority in at Sysco especially if it's a union place you can jump between shuttle and city and that guy kind of did that. He would do a city route for a year, then jump to shuttle and do that for a year and then go back to city so on and so fourth. Anyhow that was one guys opinion he didn't like FedEx Freight, but he's not everyone the stuff I read on the boards is really just complaining I guess, just wondering what you all think what's fact vs what's just people complaining about work stuff.

I think in general FedEx is more organized than Estes because FedEx has figured out how to move all of our freight without running drivers wild and racking up hotel costs like Estes drivers. FedEx works on precise schedules and timing, which is great when things go as planned, but it's annoying when something screws up the timing and cascades into making people wait.

From what I can tell, a lot of the complaints at FxF is due to either poor local management or going into the job without a clear understanding of how much (if any) dock work you will be required to do, or even how much sitting at home unpaid will be expected of you. And all of that varies by location, so it's hard to get a feel for the job until you try it or you talk to people who work at the barn you want to work at.

I love my job but I recognize that I got lucky and I'll always recommend Old Dominion over FedEx Freight, unless I know that the person would be working out of a decent FxF barn.
