So you really think if half a mega ton goes off in Atlanta or Nashville you'll still be able to play in the sprinklers in the back yard?

It was polonium. The Geiger counters did not pick it up at the airport. Geiger counters don't pick up poloniums radiation easily. So that's why he got past the airport radiation detectors, this is an assumption. It could have been brought into the country a different way. They had to use alpha detectors, which apparently aren't common and different. From the wiki page a test left a spike which indicates polonium. Then they started using alpha detectors to look for it. 138 days is the half life. Every 138 days half of the material decays into something else.

The gaurdian is a easier article. Wiki is long

Alexander Litvinenko and the most radioactive towel in history

Chernobyl that material isn't consumed in a nuclear detenation. So you have tons of it just sitting around. Decaying for millions of years. Apparently they say you can visit for a short time right now. While others say 20,000 years until it's habitable.

The goal of a nuke bomb is to take all the material and convert it into some more stable element and thereby release a ton of energy. Your trying to make it decay instantly not over a 1000 years or a million. So all that energy gets released at once. Uranium 235 has a half life of 700 million years.

U238 may be more stable because the 3 extra neutrons in the nucleus keep the protons less repulsive toward one another than the nucleus of U235. The half life of U235 is 700 million years, and the half life of U238 is 4500 million

So the original question still stands. You really think all that material floating around won't make solid ash particles radioactive?

And the guardian is a liberal rag I wouldn't put any value in. They would have a difficult time concluding Mickey Mouse works at Disneyland.
