Get ur chains ready for lookout pass in the morning.. If it snowing in Missoula, its gonna be worse out there... u also have 4th of July pass in Idaho... if u don't wanna chain up , go north from missoula on Hwy 93 to Hwy 200 west to sandpoint then South to cda/spokane and pick back up 90 there. It about 45 mins longer but no Mountain grades to go over... That How I used to get around those mountains when they shut the interstate down cuz some doofus tries to run barefoot and blocks the road

That was a big concern as well, but I checked the forecast (not from the Weather Channel), and there is a 0% chance of precip at lookout. This storm is coming out of northern Cali after dumping on Donner.

Had a new gauge appear going up Homestake yesterday. My KW still has the old style bodywork, but I have the new digital dash that the next gen KW's have. I keep my display minimalized to where I see fuel/def, water temp, oil pressure and air pressure along with the digital speedo/tach in the middle. Along the lower left side, right above the odometer a new gauge appeared climbing the hill. It was a fuel restriction gauge, it promptly disappeared going down the west side of the grade. Could it be I was starting to gel rolling down the road? The temps were in the high single digits right before climbing. The last time I fueled I was in SD, and added anti-gel...bad fuel maybe? The actual fuel filter gauge in the gauge cluster was at the same level as it normally is, and I am not that close to being due for a service.

Most likely yes, your restriction went up during a hard pull, which is normal. I like that the digital dash will display a gauge if the truck sees something that needs attention.

have you played with any of the features of the adaptive cruise? I believe you can adjust the following distance, set a temporary max speed, ect.

There is a LIM +/- (no idea what that does)and I see you can play with the adaptive #####box, but it's set out as far as it goes and still drives me nuts in traffic...when it works...a couple times a week it throws an error code then disables my traction control and cruise...and sometimes screws with the traveled miles on the ELD.

4th of July was just wet...Idaho must have money for ice melt rather than just digging up sand like Montana does. 21° and it was still liquid

Or you’re finally getting smart. Personally I don’t chain, waiting it out isn’t that big an issue and a lot cheaper than replacing a truck.

KW did produce YouTube videos in their trading academy series, they’re speed limiter buttons - you may also be able to change your following distance if you run the adaptive cruise.

Nice. Yeah idaho does 100x better with the roads then montana does... Its good local knowledge to have , my buddies taught me that early on when running lookout ... Theres been lots of times ive had to chain up montana side of lookout and get to the top at the border and have to take em off because road is salted on idaho side.... There was a couple eastbound wrecks last year because alot of guys dont know that idaho is very good and montana is bad. They go hauling ### up idaho side barefoot and cross the montana side at the top and it goes from pavement to ice rink... Super sketchy sometimes... Safe travels rest of the way

I drive up that way somewhat often, I had no clue there was a way to skip the mountain passes that require chains via highways that don't have mountain grades. I just figured if the interstate in that area has mountain grades, surely the highways around it would too.

Question though - Do they keep up with stretch of the highway during the peak of winter or is it like Highway 212 going from MT to SD where the roads get pretty bad during the winter because they're not maintained too good compared to the Interstate? What's the speed limit and do you maintain cell phone signal throughout the highways or does it drop (I use Verizon if that matters)?

I know I could use the MT 511 app and it looks like they have a road camera (from the 511 app) at Trout Creek, but I'm just wondering in general how often that particular stretch of highway is even passable during bad weather.

This is a great tip though I would've never guessed that that stretch didn't have any mountain grades on it. Thanks again!
