Trucking doesn't NECESSARILY make decent money if your time is wasted. You have to look out for your interests, not just wait for a good deal to fall in your lap. It's not uncommon for trucking companies try to fix a problem by using OTR trucks to run local, since they only pay CPM. I've worked at companies that will under-bid on a dedicated account, assigning fewer trucks/trailers/drivers than necessary for the volume of freight and then grab whatever OTR trucks are near by to make up for lack of equipment.

If a company offers some "special deal" for an OTR driver it is important to talk to the drivers already assigned to that "special deal" so you can find out if the reality of the job is suitable for you. Generally you have maximum leverage just before you accept the offer and zero 10 seconds after you accept the new offer. I would ask to get back to the previous situation, but now that you solved their problem the company may not be eager to watch their solution move to other work. Look before you leap.

 

You should take a day off and get AT LEAST Doubles/Triples (one endorsement), Tanker (necessary for certain freight inside van/reefer/flatbed, plus HazMat if you have a use for it. Every endorsement other than HazMat never expires. Tanker and doubles can be much better work environments than van/reefer. Tanker is a very easy test on the computer. There is no road test for doubles/triples or tanker, just a computer test. TruckerCountry.com has at least 10 versions of every endorsment test plus the correct answers. It's free to use.
