This is why you network a bit. Some schools will teach you the stick, for a price (not full price), and then allow you to test out with the current class. Or, you can simply walk into a small trucking company with extra trucks obviously just sitting for the day and ask. OR...ask here to see if there's anyone in your general area they can recommend or set up a meet.
There are ways. You just have to be willing to do what it takes to learn what you need for the job(s) you want.
I don't know why people go to mega for cdl school.

I had the same dilemma. Got CDL from Millis Transfer. They only had autos. I didn't even realize this would be an issue until I left to go look for local ltl jobs. They all required the auto restriction removed because some trucks are manuals. I had to go through YRC's academy to get it removed. On the bright side, It was a breeze since I was there just to shift.
I think this is the most realistic option. Private training is very expensive, and I don't think you can test out in some random guy's truck anymore.2Tap Thanks this. -
I trained with Schneider in 2000. Why? I wanted a CDL and wanted to drive OTR as I’d spent the last several years wanting too. I did my year and fulfilled my contract and stayed 5 more years. Nobody is going to hire you with less than a years experience and if they do, it likely won’t be a dream job. Very pleased I got my CDL for $0.00 out of pocket.

I started truck driving in 74.
Autos weren't even a thing back then.
Have probably driven most types.
Funny thing is when this company started using automatic transmissions about 5 years ago we ALL had to attend a 2 hour meeting on how to use an automated transmission..lolDave_in_AZ, Dna Mach and Coover Thank this. -
The dump truck drivers I see might get 30k per year. What is the "construction side"? If you dont work 12-14 hour days, you dont get paid a fair living.

"Mega' school is the best route. Room, board, training, paycheck, employment.

I almost got my CDL through KLLM. I ultimately decided not to go with them because I didn't want to be under contract. I ended up using the WIOA to pay for a private school. This worked perfect for me. But not everybody can do it like I did. I had money in the bank and reliable transportation to get there and back every day. Had my circumstances been different, I would have went through company training and been grateful for it.

I was promised everything Schneider told me back in February 2019. 2 students to 1 instructor , then it changed to 1 on 1 training in week 2, 2 weeks on the road with my 20 year veteran driver and weekends off and one Wednesday off. I was paid $550 for all 6 weeks while getting amazing training , paid hotel , food and a free CDL with no contract. I did my full year of OTR then went local and now own 2 paid off trucks , Thanks Schneider!
