I have been asked how is it to be an owner operator?

I tell ya what other owner operators do not speak or coward to say.

Whole system is set in a way new owner operators fail. Permits take a good while to get and your authority does not begin until you are paying your $1,400 or easily more monthly insurance. A lot of brokers do not want to give loads to new owner ops for the first few months.
But that does not matter because brokers are stealing from gullible drivers that is mostly everyone.
All the big companies have higher paying contracts. Everything on loadboards are left over odds and ends so the bottom feeders like us go thru.

Because they are thiefs you having years of being a company driver and having insurance that totally covers their freight means nothing to broker thiefs. New authority excuse is an excuse for brokers to steal from you. You do not matter anyways. Too many people with trucks who are looking for work.

Cheap insurances like ooida are trash because many brokers do not accept them. Old women there are extremely rude and salty the high majority of times. Ooida under writing team who approves you is extremely picky unlike other insurances yet they give you trash insurance many brokers do not accept and limits your ability to work.

Ooida is owned by a careless group of people who have already made their money and customer service does not really matter at the end of the day. Just squeezing dollars off the gullible matters.
You leave 30 more will come.

Brokers are one of the biggest thieves. They are listing all loads for around $1.30 and even listed as low as $0.61 cents.

Keep in mind it takes about $0.66 per mile at the lowest in diesel to run your truck. If the load is heavy or you go over mountains or stop and go in traffic your cost is insanely more. This does not even count all the wear and tear on your pricey truck. The miles and devaluation or maintenance or future repairs.
So give brokers the finger and say no.

What brokers are paying does not cover your pay, your bills and are laughing to the bank and do not care an inch about how you fail.

Brokers are your enemy. If you negotiate they know they can pass on you and just find one of many other gullible truck drivers out there.
Brokers become rich by bankrupting new owner operators.

Interesting Post. A lot seems true regarding Brokers which is why this video is essential on understanding what is expected to happen.

This explains what's occurring today Where @ 2pm a Truck Stop I'm at was Full. Not much good loads today!..
$1.58 cpm can never be good unless you own a Fleet with 10k Trucks and 70% of your freight is from Direct Customers.

Sorry you have misconceptions of what this is all about, it is a business.

Most new o/o's had this expectation that it is going to be like driving for a company and the rest is only crap you have to go through because the man is going to keep all newbies down.

ALL the rules and regs made to make newbies fail?

    Well, no.

Most of those who try, fail. There are many reasons, most of which are financial - under-capitalized is the biggest problem that crashes a new owner.

One reason is it is not unlike other businesses, they all take time to set up and get moving. Just the simplest businesses can be a pain in the ***** to get off the ground.

Most don't seem to get it isn't like getting in the truck and driving away into the sunset with a load.

    Brokers?

Thousands of brokers, it takes time to find good ones unless you know someone who can recommend one.

OOIDA isn't an insurance company, it is a service organization for the benefit of owner-operators. Not effective but not all that bad.

Every point you made has been covered extensively on TTR. By all means utilize our search feature.

You sound to me like a guy who jumped in head first without doing any research. Talking to the lease op’s at your mega isn’t research.

It’s been posted that new entrant insurance has been quoted well north of $30,000 for a one year policy by Progressive.

The whole broker thing has been beaten to death on this forum. Most members thoughts on the subject are well known.

Cheap freight is another one that’s been covered as well as operating expenses. I hope you knew your cpm/ operating costs long before you pulled the trigger on buying a truck and opening an operating authority.

Nothing about it is cheap, nothing about it is easy. That said, for those who succeed it’s pretty darn good gig.

No shortage of people who once they get hired for a job, they have this mentality that their employer NOW….owes them a living….life insurance, health insurance, a residual income when they retire, etc.
They also believe that their paycheck shouldn’t be interrupted in the event of personal trials and tribulations…..it’s their employer that should keep them flush.
When these same people decide to go out on their own to become self employed, some of them learn really quickly that those responsibilities are entirely on them. Some garner a little respect for what their previous employer had to deal with….others never lose the old mentality. They are a victim of anyone else except themselves for their inability to do simple math.
I went out on my own and found out real quick that just because your name is on a door, doesn’t mean you are successful. My political leaning changed dramatically, I started resenting “wage earners” for their lack of knowledge of what it takes to actually run a business (just having someone on payroll!)
This is also the reason that in the quarter century that I’ve been self employed, I’ve never hired an employee.
Buying a truck is hard but it’s the easiest part of this messed up industry!
