Start now. There's really no sense in "sticking it out".
Simply have him call his recruiter and tell them the truth. He had no idea what he was getting into and after talking to a few drivers and his dad, (who is also a driver), he decided that this account would not be a good place to start.
Also, before he calls, have him go to the Schneider website and find out what else is available and ask for that.
    Good luck

What? Lol. We're literally the most northern county in Virginia and right next door to the Panhandle of WV. I can be in Brunswick, MD in under an hour depending on traffic and where in the county I'm coming from and Wardensville, WV is 35 mins down the road from my house.

It needs to be switched BEFORE he arrives at orientation. While it's possible yo switch afterwards, before it easier.

Also the only DG DC near y'all that I'm aware of is South Boston, VA. I don't think the account would be a good fit even if it was something like Target.

Do look into tankers or just van regional.

Just looked and there isn't anything else except a run for Aurora Parts. They said he had to live within 100 miles of Carlisle, PA and he's not eligible since we're....103 miles away. VTL options available but they want 3 months exp. How difficult would it be to do the DG run for 3 months and then ask to switch to VTL?

@gentleroger could probably answer this better that I, but my first inclination is that if they need him bad enough, they'll overlook the 3 month thing.
Secondly, that account is so bad that it's entirely possible he wouldn't make it 3 months before he ran into something, getting fired, and make it EXTREMELY difficult to get another job.
My concerns are more about hitting stuff than the work per se. I consider myself to be a pretty good driver for over 10 years and I wouldn't do it.

There isn't anything available near us except an Aurora Parts but we're 3 miles further from Carlisle than the max to qualify for it according to the recruiter. I'm hoping he'll try to get to the DMV by this weekend to test for endorsements. The instructor at the school he was at told the students there they were ineligible to get any endorsements until they found a manual truck that they could re-test in to remove the E restriction. :/ We finally showed him on the DMV website where that wasn't the case, so now he's studying and going to get that tanker endorsement.

Note: if you do a job search on Schneider's website using the zip code '22630' (for Front Royal, VA)....in the search results you get basically the same job that I listed in post #68 above --

Over-the-Road (OTR) Van Truckload truck driver - eastern 37 states | Top drivers earn up to $78,000 | Up to $1,000 sign-on bonus | Schneider (schneiderjobs.com)

The takeaway: sometimes just a little distance can make a BIG difference. :p

A question I would have for the recruitment dept: why can't your son have the above job -- in lieu of that DG dedicated?
